Some more close-up experiments, this time with the kit lens. These are not actually aloes, but the flowers look very much like those of an aloe. They grow in deep shade.

In both cases the flash was on the left of the flower. The highlights in the 2nd pic are due to sunlight.

Good shots Al, I actually prefer #2 even if the highlights are blown (never did understand why blown highlights are a sin).

Brian V. Thanks for commenting Brian. I think the idea behind the sinfulness of blown highlights is that there's no detail in that part of the pic. However, I agree that in some cases highlights can add to the mood of the pic.
