What can I say? The photo sucks, but it was the only one I could get before a ranger made me move back from the bear. The bear was waistdeep in a blackberry patch. Best I could do at 1/30th of a second at 300 mm with a handheld shot. ...but at least it's a bear.

Ahhh I see you haven't read the tutorial by ED. When in this position what you do is pretend to obey the ranger then when he or she is distracted begin chasing the bear through the woods to get some really great shots.

reply to all: I wanted to shoot the ranger. I went down the hill and found out from some on-lookers that he had left as soon as he yelled at me on the bullhorn. If I had known that I would never have gone down the hill.

Believe me, I got as close as the bear would let me get. It was a male and let me know with a fake charge that I wasn't to get any closer when I got about 40 feet from him. The major problem was that there was also a female with three cubs in the area and I couldn't find her and didn't want to take a chance on getting between her and the cubs in the blackberry patch. As you can see from the photo, the brush was high and thick and no way was I going to push my luck that far.

Not to shabby considering the conditions you were shooting. Good capture.

Sounds like a pretty exciting encounter. Good decision not pushing your luck with the female with cubs, although it would look cool, we don't need any action shots of you getting rushed by an angry mother.:hurt

Thanks Harry. Will you show the me the wetlands if I head down to Florida to shoot some lighthouses this fall? Since I'm not doing the racing anymore I've changed my plans for the Everglades this year and will probably put that off until next year.

I'll let you know when for sure, but probably in November after I've lost the fall colors up here. :):
