Velvet Lined

I made a little trip to the Smoky Mountains this past weekend. It was somewhat of a wash - pun intended as it rained or dizzled quite a bit. Made for some nice subdued lighting.

That deer was at Magnolia Gardens last night. He came and chased off the other one. The photo I have is out of focus. Yours is wonderful.

This weekend was kinda damp here, too. Can be very nice lighting for photos. None of that harsh shadow stuff to deal with. But I just can't make it work for me in the rain.

Nice lighting on the deer, buck, whatever...........I never used to go outdoors to learn the language.

Thanks, Ben. It's good to get a little time to get back on DG. Taking a breather for a couple of weeks prior to heading out to Rocky Mountain NP, Yellowstone NP, and Grand Teton NP. I'll be heading out around Aug. 24th.

Don't know if this last one counts as Nature & Wildlife, but just thought that the horses did a good job of posing.

I spent most of the weekend walking around with the camera in a plastic bag and only took it out when I wanted to take a shot.

I was planning on calling you when I arrived in Charleston week before last, but I only spent one day and one night there before heading down towards Beaufort to shoot the Hunting Island and Harbor Town (Hilton Head) lighthouses, but it was raining cats and dogs the only day I was in town.

Did you shoot the birds in Magnolia Gardens as well? I'm still looking forward to another "bird shooting" trip with you. ...and Morris Island Lighthouse as well.

I did the birds that are in that post at Magnolia Gardens. The babies are just about all grown, but they are hanging around the area like hot rodding teenagers. In that small area I have trouble getting a flight shot of them.

Saturday morning, before the rain, I shot birds here at Shem Creek in Mt Pleasant. Where the shrimp boats come in to the docks. I have a thread on here of that. Will try to post it to you tomorrow or something, too tired to find it now.

I have at least three places I shoot birds. I think I am getting an annual pass to Boone Hall. It has some birds, too and is closer.

I was walking part way up the connector for awhile. I have decided to accept the fact that I am too old for that, but the shots of birds, I am very happy with them. I got my first stork shot up there. (the connector bridge to Isle of Palms from Mt Pleasant.) It is a killer for me. And I did find storks in a few other areas.

Thanks, Jeff, it's good to be back for a week or so before I head out to points west. Of course, if anyone is going to be shooting in the Yellowstone or Grand Teton area the first half of September, I'll be happy to link up with them.

Bochie, the highlight on the antlers came from the fuzz since the antlers are still in velvet. The velvet carries blood to the antlers while they are growing. Once the antlers are fully grown, the deer will start rubbing the antlers on tree trunks and branches to shed the velvet. At any rate, the velvet has a fuzzy surface and it caught the diffused light from the cloudy day and made them seem to almost glow.

What a great capture. Wonderful sharpness. The color contrast is very good and the background gives a wonderful setting.

Thanks John. Anytime on the hooking up. I'll be out west until the middle of next week. I'm sitting in Salt Lake City right now and will be back on the road tomorrow morning early. I'm sitting here sorting and cataloging what I've done for the last two weeks and trying to decide whether I head back to Rocky Mountain NP for a day or two and then on to the tallgrass area in Kansas or head south to Bryce and Zion National Parks for three or four days. I've never been to Zion or Bryce so I'm leaning that way.

I will be heading over to Charleston, SC for about a half a week or better during the middle of September. I hope to get to shoot with Ginger for at least one day of that.

I will be in the Smoky Mountains for the fall colors for about two and a half weeks towards the end of October. After that I'm going to try and hook up with HarryB in Florida for a day or two to do some birds when I go down to shoot the Florida east coast lighthouses.

I also plan on being in the Smokies when the first snow falls this year - of course that may not be until after the first of the year.

That's about all I have planned so far. Let me know what you've got going on between now through the first few months of 2006 and we will see what we can work out.
