As an absolute beginner....

Whilst walking in the woods last week I got this snap with my s7000, I was pleased the way the colours turned out. What do you all think I wonder?

Hi Snap :wave

I like the subject and the composition. I would have been tempted to leave a wee bit more room on the bottom, so the path through the trees didn't feel so tight against the bottom of the frame.

The next thing to think about is lighting. Is there a time of day that would lend itself to more dramatic lighting of the tunnel versus the trees? Or just prettier tones of light in general?

Hey snap,

:agree with Sid (I've got to quit doing that :lol3 ) Your pic, as is, leaves me longing to look through the "tunnel" those branches have created. Including more foreground would help, as well as possibly a lower to the ground perspective/shooting angle. That's a nice path leading under those branches and it can easily be used to direct the viewer's eyes towards the "tunnel".

Sid's point about different lighting is also valid. Just imagine this place with shafts of light coming down through those branches :lust

Not bad the way you shot it, but I'd sure visit this spot again, at different times of day, if I were you :D

Thanks for the comments guys. I can see what you both mean about the tunnel, which is exactly what it is like when walking through it.
I often go through this spot so I will have few more goes at this one.

:thumb Excellent. And I wonder what the light is like at different times of day? Does it ever get foggy/misty?

Shots that leave me wondering where a path or road goes always intrigue me. Some
work as horizontal but unless they're shot using medium or large format, it seems
vertical composition is a better way to go (well, unless you have a wide T&S lens
that is).

Shafts of light offer more to the shot as well. As Sid suggests, a better time of day
might offer different light. Is it a morning or an afternoon place? Either of those times
are almost always good for photos.

Your walks look like they make wonderful subjects. Do show us a few more.
