View Full Version : Shared Photo Links

In the past, I used password protected as my preferred way to keep private albums from unwanted access, but it has its drawbacks, and I am considering hiding the galleries instead.
The problem is, I occasionally would send a link from these hidden galleries to a friend, or post a photo on a forum, and by doing so, I would expose the URL of the image, giving away the gallery URL to complete strangers.
Is there a way to generate a totally unique URL for shared images?

You can do it this way
http://www.smugmug.com/photos/482747074_UZHgU-L.jpg
but it redirects to your site, not exposing anything that is not public.

If you have a Share link at that gallery then click that to get a link.
Smugmug photo links are in the form of
http://YOUR_URL_HERE.com/photos/XXXXXXXX-YYYY-S.jpg
There is no gallery-identifying information at all in that link.
EDIT: Like Allen said above....

That is not what I get with my account.
When I click on Share to obtain a link, I get, e.g., this:
http://photos.lam.ws/Family/LittleLam/2010Feb/201002222106-031/794441925_MRkxL-XL.jpg
which exposes:
http://photos.lam.ws/Family/LittleLam/2010Feb/
(which is password protected)

You can do it this way
http://www.smugmug.com/photos/482747074_UZHgU-L.jpg
but it redirects to your site, not exposing anything that is not public.

Thanks, but then I have to generate the link myself every time and cannot use the Share Link feature?

btw, when i try the link in your example:
http://www.smugmug.com/photos/482747074_UZHgU-L.jpg
It redirected me to:
http://photos.smugmug.com/Family/LittleLam/2010Feb/201002222106-031/794441925_MRkxL-L.jpg
which exposes the gallery URL.
I believe Picasa and Flickr both give you a unique URL that does not expose your gallery URL. I was hoping there's a hidden trick to enable this in Smugmug. Otherwise, sharing a photo within a hidden gallery will automatically exposes the gallery URL.

Thanks Allen, but oddly, that is NOT what I am seeing.

Thanks Allen, but oddly, that is NOT what I am seeing.Make sure you're looking when you're logged out.
If you want no redirect, then link to an image in an unlisted gallery. While your galleries are password protected, their existence is public so Smugmug doesn't know you want to hide their existence (and you haven't told it so). In fact, for search engine optimization, it's better to use the URL to the image with the category and gallery name in it which may be why Smugmug redirects to that one.
I have a specific unlisted gallery that I use for externally linked images that I don't want any reference to a specific gallery and it works like a charm.
