Can you share your light set up? I have the opportunity to help shoot a three mat tournament in a couple of weeks. Speedlights or Alien Bees. I have both at my disposal with Cybersync's to trigger them with.

I use 4 SB800 speedlights on PWs They will do a fairly good job of lighting the gym.

3 mats = 6 teams?

How many bees? how many speedlights...?

There will be three of us, one per mat. Each of us has two Bees. Mine are 1600, the other guys have a pair of 800's and a pair of 1600's. We will be on different channels so hopefully they won't mess up any shots.

I've never done this before so it will be a new experience. I plan to use the 70-200 2.8L on a MK3 and maybe just one light bounced off the ceiling set up behind me. Maybe I can move to the other side and switch to a second Bee (on different channels) and shoot from there also.

The gym is not a very well lit gym. It takes ISO 6400 and f/2.8 for ambient shots.

If the ceiling is light colored, I think your plan is a good one. If you can set up 2 ABs in each mat corner, they will do a phenomenal job. Only issue will be when the other mats light up the gym too...

Thanks Tim. Here is a link (http://lscsn.com/photocart/index.php?do=photocart&viewGallery=2483) to some photos of a game shot in that gym with ambient lighting. Note: They are not mine, but belong to a friend. Best I can recall, there are bleachers on both sides, but they collapse the center section so the score table can be set up for basketball. I see the removable hand rails in a couple of the pics, so I might have to attach a light stand to one of them if I get the mid court mat! :-(

Assuming you are shooting manual with the old PWs (and not TTL with the new ones). Are you just lighting the mat evenly with light coming from all four corners, or are you only bringing light from two of the corners?

I used the SB800 in gangs of two, and have them along the walls, bouncing off the ceiling....

3 has a surprising amount of light on the chest for a ceiling bounce. 6 and 8 are more what I would have expected.

You get entire gym coverage with that setup? Assuming the ceiling is white, correct? How high is it? Using power packs on the flashes? What power setting for the flashes and what ISO for the camera? How long's your recycle with that setup/those settings?

I am toying with remote flashing a district wrestling tournament this weekend. I've done it for NBA basketball before (from the catwalks) and high school basketball from the corners of the stands, but not wrestling. That's why all the questions. This will be one of the those 6 mats one day and 5 mats the next in the same gym affairs. I haven't seen the gym yet, so I don't know what to expect. If I decide to remote flash, I'll probably drive by the gym (about 10 miles away) and take a look before making a final decision in the morning. Otherwise, it's back to ambient light and high ISO (and Noiseware).

EXIF is intact, I believe these are around f/3.2, ISO 1000, 1/250. Ceiling is relatively low here, Flash is set at probably 1/2 power. There is no way I could light a 6 mat tourney with 4 speedlights, unless I went more direct... I don't use power packs, just the SB800 5th battery option. I get around 5-600 pics with no change in battery.
