Does any of you know anything about the Tamron AF 28-300 xr di ld aspherical macro if f3.5-6.3 would it be any good for sport or would it be a waste of money

I don't know particularly. But bear in mind on most cameras a f/6.3 lens will not auto-focus. Canon 1-series will, but if you own a 1-series I doubt you'd be looking at that lens. The type of sport in particular will be a factor as well. For indoor sports, or outdoor sports at less-than-full-sun, that lens is too slow. Your shutter speeds will not be high enough. For motor sports that will usually not be an issue, but the speed of the focus motor will be. For soccer in bright sun it will probably work just fine.

I had the earlier version of that lens for awhile. Its a good all purpose lens when you have bright light. For the price its a good value. There are better lenses out there but they cost much more $. Here's a pic from the older version at 300mm.

That was AF. The lens is sharper at 200mm.

I had this lens for a couple of weeks, then i got caught up in the canon triple
rebates and returned it. It AF's fine, but it does like light. If the scene was a
bit dark, it would start to hunt. To me it felt like a solid lens.

If you're going to try to use it for sports, it may not be the best choice.

One more thing, I had bought this lens 2 days after I bought my D Reb 300.
I think if I had it now, I could do better than I did back then.

the new 18-200 version for aps-c sized sensors gives you 300mm due to crop factor and is on my list of affordable and practical glass to buy.

its $700 australian dollar$ here and that perfectly fits my maximum monthly purchase budget that I have allocated.

it looks like a good ,light- weight ,walk around zoom.they call it a macro too..

its not L glass but should do the job until you wish to upgrade.

Thanks for all the replies i am going to go for the Sigma 70-200 2.8 just missed one for £160 at a local shop or Canon 70-200 f4 L

Decent, lense, nothing special except for being light, cheap, and flexible.

Non 1-series Canon's do not auto-focus at anything over f/5.6. A 1-series will auto-focus up to f/8. Are you sure your 300D is auto-focusing on that lens at full-zoom (and hence when the max. aperture will be 6.3, because at full-wide its under 5.6 and will auto-focus)?
