View Full Version : A nav bar AND gallery page AND breadcrumbs - redundant?

Can someone help me here :
It seems to me that since I have a nav bar on all of my gallery pages - is it necessary to have the Main Galleries page (in my case, renamed Portfolio) AND the breadcrumbs on the upper left side of pages?
too many functions and confusing options or is it just me?

Wouldn't a nav bar be enough for viewers to get where they needed to go -
too many functions and confusing options or is it just me?
Is there a code available to hide the Main Galleries page from viewers - or is it a bad idea to do so?
Thanks!

You only have two public galleries right now so it's a little hard to imagine how your site is going to evolve. The way it is now, you certainly don't need the portfolio page because each of the two galleries there is in your navbar. The breadcrumb is the only place the title of the gallery appears, but with just two galleries that isn't that important either. But, when you have many galleries (which I assume you will at some point), then categorization and gallery listings and a breadcrumb that helps you move around will be more important.

Hi John,
Thanks for your speedy reply.
I plan for my site to be a simple viewing tool for potential clients...I am going to add another three to six sections to my navbar : about, pricing page, contact, and maybe one or two more picture galleries.--so all categories on my nav bar are public galleries.
and the other function of the site will be for clients to proof and purchase prints - and those galleries will be password protected and private.
with this site plan in mind -- do you think it's still necessary to still have nav bar, breadcrumbs, and portfolio page for viewers to see?
Is there a code available to hide the portfolio page from visitors?
I would love it to be available for own reference.
I think I can refind the code to hide the breadcrumbs unless you have it handy to cut and paste?
Thanks again for any further words of wisdom.

www.lingeron.smugmug.com (http://www.lingeron.smugmug.com) As far as I can tell, you have nothing linking to the portfolio page except the breadcrumb. If you hide the breadcrumb, then nobody will ever find the portfolio page (though you can use it anytime because you know the URL). Just remember that if you hide the breadcrumb, you need to provide some way to show a title for a given gallery that is being viewed.

The nav bar will be the way to a gallery. within the categories on the nav bar, ie, families...there will only be a collection of 20 pictures or so. There will not be any separate photo albums within the main gallery.
so on each page, if a viewer wants to go to "kids " portfolio, while they are browsing "families", then they would simply click "kids" on the navbar to view that one gallery (again, no sub photo albums within "kids' - just collection of twenty shots"
does this make sense?
my smugmug site is www.smugmug.lingeron.com
given this : do you still think I need a portfolio page and breadcrumbs? I want the navbar to be the MAIN and if possible, only toolbar to access my portfolio.
thanks again.

Bumping this up -- can someone help me please :) I didn't respond because I thought I'd already given you my thoughts. This is a personal choice item and you've already expressed your opinion on how you want it to work. When I pointed out things to think about, you seemed to still like your idea. Is there some new question I haven't addressed?

Thanks for getting back to me John.
still mulling over it actually. My tiny brain can't compare and contrast until I see how the site will work without breadcrumbs and galleries page.
Was looking to see if you had a tutorial, codes, or a magic link that you could share to hide the gallery/portfolio page of thumbs to visitors.
again, thanks for your feedback and help.
