Questions about prints

I tried to see if this had been asked a hundred times before I posted this. If so, I can't find it.

So far I haven't ordered prints of anything on my SmugMug site but I'm considering it. Although I'm very happy with the image quality on SmugMug, I'm assuming that there's some compression when photos are uploaded. It seems to me that compression can't do any favors for the quality of prints, which is why I've stuck with local labs for enlargements. Am I wrong?

Also, I'm wondering what adjustments the printing process automatically makes, if any. As I understand it, everything here gets converted to sRGB, so that's probably not a concern. Does the process automatically tweak the colors, sharpen for printing or anything along those lines?

Any help would be appreciated.

There is no compression of the original image, and that's what is used for printing.
