Since retiring a couple of years ago and moving to the mountains, I've enjoyed hiking and photographing waterfalls. I'd appreciate some critique to help me imporve my photographic techniques. This picture was taken with my Canon S1 IS. I also have a RebelXT which I don't usually carry on hikes, but I'm planning to purchase a backpack to carry the RebelXT on future hikes.

I've cropped this picture on the left and right - there was just more of the same on both sides which I cropped out. I took a couple of pictures at a slower shutter speed, but I like the appearance of the falls at this speed.

I'd appreciate comments.

Thanks,

George

spider,
you are the third person (not including me) on dgrin that's from WNC. i have actually stood in that very spot. unfortunately without my camera.

i like this picture very much. i think you could actually crop it on the sides a little more. make it a true vertical, with just a hint of the foreground trees. it looks like the sky was beautiful that day, but it is a little distracting with the small amount that is there. maybe crop that out as well.

just my humble opinions.

i think it's a keeper though.

Hi Phil, thanks for the suggestions. Is this what you had in mind?

yea, but now i've changed my mind about the blue sky (sorry). i think now it (the sky) kind of gives a sense of depth (or something) and maybe a little at the top would help. it just kind of looks flat without it, now that i'm looking at it.

George, its trully a beautiful location(i frequent the graveyard fields at least every few weeks), but I think the time of day just wasnt right for this type of shot. The water is a bit too washed out, my guess is becuase of the direct sunlight on the falls becuase of its eastern exposure. I suggest trying to avoid having any type of foilage in the shot unless it trully frames the waterfall perfectly, otherwise shots tend to look a bit busy or lead the viewer to think you could'nt get any closer and so had to settle with a blocked view.

I've never had luck with the falls at graveyard fields and neither has any other photographer I've talked to - UNLESS - you get lucky and find a very foggy or overcast day. My honest opinion - hold off on the falls until the fall months when the fields really show their true uniqueness:

, their are always some real overcast days during these months and this in combination with the foilage colors would make for a beautiful waterfall shot from the location you took this one at.

We trully live in a beautiful place and who knows, perhaps I'll see you around hiking and shooting someday!

Thanks for the helpful advice. Autumn would probably be much better. The day I was at the falls, it was about noon and extremely hot & humid. Will see you there in October.
