I have no idea what this was but just struck me as an interesting object. Is it a good photograph?
It wasn't vertical and that bugs me now. I think the horizon's at the wrong hieght but I can't work out whether it would have been better shooting from higher up or low level. There was a cliff behind me so I actually could go back or up more than a foot or so.
It looked ok on my monitor @ home but here it looks a little washed out.

Sorry to say, but this shot doesn't work for me, and these usually do. I guess I'm not sure if this is a landscape with something in the foreground or a foreground picture that's too busy. I agree with your self critique on placement. My take on this is if you raise your camera, the emphasis will be landscape. If you lower your camera, the emphasis will be the foreground. Your subject is too dark and lacks detail on my monitor. The rusty box works in my opinion, but the broken concrete is too distracting. The shape of the object is interesting and has potential, just not in this shot, IMHO.
Sorry Adrian but this is also just my .02,
Chris
Note: I've been wrong before and will be wrong many more times before I'm done.

I agree with Chris. My eyes keep wanting to go to the top of the pole (it is the highest point of contrast after all) and the problem is that it's located right at the intersection of the water and the mountains and it's blocking the most prominent cliff of the background.

Chris & Erich, I think you're right - I was concentrating on the foreground and forgot the horizon.
Nothing much I could have done with the exposure, it was very bright and getting the detail of the post would have blown the clouds. I nice polariser, that's what I need.
It was an interesting object that caught my eye as I walked passed - in hindsight I should have spend more time. I shall now go away and kick myself.

If I had a penny for everytime I've wanted to kick myself I'd have all my dream camera equipment. I wouldn't sweat it. Lots of opportunities will continue to pop up!
Cheers,
Erich
