Well, before I delete it, I'd probably do so after more than just one opinion.

The subject is Tasty...at least 24-26 of those flies seem to think the little birdy was pretty tasty...so I don't think its totally inappropriate. However, if the moderator feels its too graphic, then I will not actually submit it as an entry.

I think 80% of displayed shots this year were violence related and showed human misery. FACT - these were the ones chosen for display!
Another fact - I think most of them were extraordinary but my stomach couldn't take so much of it.

My point is that you are absolutely right in your choice to display your shot but there will be people who find it difficult to view.

MainFragger, back to your shot - I find it difficult to identify the 'victim' as a bird. I also think the spotted background is inappropriate. Any chance of moving the models elsewhere? :D

Umm..well, the spots you see in the background are the pavement. I dosn't mind looking at death..but I don't want to touch it! And those are horeshoe flies..which LOVE to bite the heck out of humans. So I did not wish to gain their attention. This picture was actually taken as a macro on a superzoom Sigma lens.

Also, I took this picture in Philadelphia, and then later in the evening drove to Atlantic City, where I am today.

Also, I am finding this discussion interesting.

Particularly since I am watching a Bob Newhart comedy retrospective on ETV. The educational channel. You know most comedy is based on "sad".

So.........somehow I seque to a dead bird being inappropriate for a photography challenge. I don't think it is at all. Matter is not disappearing, only being used in a different way, or something like that.

Better than anything I have thought of.............

To get back to the original question, I think it fits the topic, but I don't think it will pull too many votes. I agree with Ginger though - good thought.

Andy, I keep thinking of the picture of your wife eating a strawberry. Wish I had a wife for this one, and she could clean my house, too.

So, you all, the ones with sexy, young wives, get out the shot of Andy's with the strawberry eating woman: that looks tasty on many levels.

I am in "crash" mode. Triple digit heat today. Oncologist appt, which I am keeping, no photography. I might go to a bbq thing on Friday, outdoors, but I don't think that is the answer.

Personally I grew up on a farm, I might have been 5 or 6 by the time I butchered my first cridder, a chicken, and yes I am sure it was tasty when I had it for supper later that night. I might have left of the fact that this was a bird, but to me it fits the challenge, and gets an A+ for thinking outside the box. Taste is subjective, just like photography. Who here knows what Balut is? And who has tasted it? Most American's would have hard time enjoying that Philippine delicacy, personally I think it is a little bland. :D

I DO love to gross people out when I can. And yes, I often push the bounds of good taste. I was even kicked off smugmug for having semi-erotic material(initially nudity, but that was removed, and I still got shut down).

However, I am very forward when I do such things and am not at all ashamed of my efforts. That having been said...James hit the nail on the head when he stated I was trying to think "out of the box". Thats precisely what I was doing. Not trying to shock anyone.

By the way, without flies and bugs there would be about 10x more disease in this world than there is. While I used this for Tasty...if they ever wanted to run a challenge on "Cleaning Up", I could re-use this picture again (if it weren't for the timeline factor of the challenges).

I actually have no problem with you posting this for the challenge. I like the idea of thinking outside the box and must applaud you there. On the other hand, I have to agree with others that it's not a winning photo for this challenge. As a photo, it works as a documentary of life. Artistically, I think there were many more things that you could have done. The angle of this shot actually detracts (too busy of a background) from your subject. The lighting is flat and it's a bit on the soft side.
If you had shot with better lighting and a different angle, I wouldn't have a problem voting for something like this. It fits the challenge theme, but photographically, how does it stand up to the other contributions.

As well as the gross vs cool, you also have the art vs porn subject, we all have to remember that photography is very subjective. One mans art is another mans porn, but to the doc it's just another payment on the car. :rofl Cool snake shot andy, that guy picked a big meal.

I think it's been fairly well established that it will not be deleted. I think MainFraggers point was well made. What is gross to you is tasty to someone or something else and visa versa. The thread has gone to 2 pages so there is no longer a need to scroll past it or view it. Or are you somehow drawn to it? :D

I think that is the point of Mainfraggers post. It's delicious to some that are not human. Trust me, it doesn't look appetizing to me or any other healthy person. But no doubt, it's tasty the these little flying pests. I'm having fun with this tread because it's pushing the topic outside of the box (human taste) into taste as general. It's another area to explore for those that are wondering what to photograph. Hopefully, they will concentrate more on the artistic value of the subject. If anyone gets an idea that's outside the box, then this thread worked.
Think Tasty...Tasty Freeze, Tasty buds (now we are getting close to my idea), realizing good taste.

I think it was "Charlie" the tuna. We want tuna that tastes good, not tuna with good taste:D. I'm already having too much fun with this so I'm going to go back to work now:cry.

I wouldn't do that or anything close to that because it's in poor taste, such was the first photo in this string. It's not a matter of black and white, but rather shades of grey. And those shades are chosen at every turn. Some rate it a light shade...some a darker shade. I'd hope the poster would refrain from posting such disgusting images on this fine photo forum and save them for more appropriate venues....and I'll choose to go there at times for my fair share of shock.

I've come to expect from this forum still lifes, portraits, landscapes and other shots posted for these contests, not vile shots of decomposing birds being swarmed by flies. Get the point?

Anyway, I enjoy the variety of opinions...everyone's got one, but not really the preachings.

i do not share your opinion - the photo by mainfragger conforms to the theme (the flies find the bird "tasty"), it shows creativity - out of the box thinking - and it's certainly a world away different than pics of a kitty run over by a truck - which i do agree would be in poor taste.
