let's see your dog, cat, iguana, turtle or other ersatz pet. i'm a dog guy myself, and here is ms. natasha snow, in her fluffy white glory.

shot last weekend with my sony f828. in post: converted to b&w (channel mixer>50/50/0 monochrome) and then levels adjustment, that's it)

so how 'bout it, let's see your personal critters. if you've previously posted, throw 'em up again right here in this thread...

This is my dog Phantom. We took her on a short vacation last weekend to Mendocino, where we all had a blast. There are a lot of great parks, trails and dog friendly places to go.

This was taken on our first night after a short hike. The trail leads back to our cottage. We were watching the sunset on the beach when I turned around and saw the dog posing. I cheated a bit, I used the magic "want a cookie" to get her to tilt her head. :)

I can't resist a dog thread! Buddy is the centre of our universe (whether we want it or not!).

Not a particularily great photo, but I just couldn't resist ...

We wanted Buddy to come in the house a couple of hours ago and like a little kid, he thought he could just stretch the time outside by plopping in the doorway and being "partway in"...

It leaves a mystery; what color is the cat? Could be orange, gray, just about any color but black or white.

We have two shelter cats. They are both about 8 years old and are both totally crazy. I think it's a little like people who have very difficult childhoods. I suppose the forms of insanity our cats have isn't as bad as it would be in a person or even a dog. I've posted their pictures before, but I'll try to get some fresh shots and tell their stories.

The boys and I have been rescuing the cats and kittens on another old farmstead that is to be burned within the very near future. So far, the boys and I have "captured" 7 adult cats and 10 kittens, with (7 adults & 4 kittens to go)... Two of the kittens, Paris & Brit, had barely openned their eyes when we retrieved them, and we have been bottle feeding them for the past 16 days. Another kitten (tortie) was only about 6 weeks old and has just been placed in a "new" home. We have 7 more kittens to place... IF anyone's interested?!

Thanks Sid... glad you liked them... Tough getting photos of kittens that just a short time ago, had never been handled by humans. As you can see, they are already really quite friendly, and docile...
But the big question now is: Do you want a cute and adorable, ready to be loved, not afraid of dogs, kitten?...
What I really need is a way to get some of these photos sen by prospective adoptees!

Thank you Andy... That is flattering... But "What is it that you like about the photograph?" What could I still do to improve it. Is there something that feels more right about it? Something missing? Whould you have done something different? What about the tonal range? Warmth of color? Do they seem right? Lighting... I guess I need you to be concise, and brutal if necessary. I'm sure there must be some room for improvement...

I'd really appreciate your hard evaluation, if you have the time, and don't mind.

I need to get these right... I hope to open the shop in October or so.

Ever since Buddy was a puppy, he has hated water. Somehow he skipped the whole "water gene". More like a cat ... wouldn't be caught DEAD near water.

Well today he showed us old dogs do learn new tricks! (he's 10).

Today was a beautiful sunny day, so we took a long walk at a local off leash area and walked down to the river. This wasn't anything new, we've been here before. Maybe it was the heat, who knows, but Buddy just ran right in to the water like he had been doing it all his life!

Had to up the iso to 800 to get 1/60th shutter speed on this shot.

I met 'Merlin' yesterday at a fundraiser for John Kerry's presidential campaign. He is 16 years old and pretty quiet. The shot was difficult because of the large difference in the lit lighter body and the unlit dark face.

Ay, the's the hard part about taking in the kittens... finding good homes for them.

I shouldn't speak for Andy... but I will! I think the reason the shot with your son works so well is because it captures a wonderful, soft and loving expression in his eyes and smile... which pairs nicely with the kitten. And the composition works too.

Rutt, that is your photo of the Westie..............can you get movement from it?
I agree that it is really good. Was thinking it was just because of the breed, cute breed, and I have learned that feet and small dogs are good, but even the curve of the sidewalk works well. Just a good photo, I will agree.

Also, since I just saw it, I like the photo of Lucy. A collie, I think.

I may be wrong on who owns dogs and who comments, checking on that gets to be "work" after a while. Whoever takes the shots, they are good.

ginger_55
Jun-24-2004, 07:32 AM
And that is unusual??? I often sit on the sidewalk, or ground, where ever to get my dog's pictures. In fact, it is amazing what one can see just sitting on the sidewalk. I get tired, sit down, see all sorts of good stuff to take pictures of.

If I want action shots or whatever from my dogs, in my postage stamp sized yard, I go outside, sit on the walk and wait.

I am sitting on the sidewalk here. I don't know where some of my other dog photos are from that yard, I am spoiled by using smugmug to put them here, but I sat on the sidewalk, I do that to show my photographer husband how I do it.
He sat in the chair, and he became interesting to me. The dogs were running around the bushes, so you can definitely see a dog running on the right and my husband is posing on the left. I put it into black and white just for the heck of it.

My favorite way to take pictures is to just wait. So, especially with a dog, I sit on the ground and wait, makes them comfortable. They become bored after awhile and go on about their business. I am always surprised at people who don't "wait" on just about everything, kids, dogs, people..........well, maybe it is because I like candids. Here is a portrait candid.

http://gingerSnap.smugmug.com/photos/4463145-M.jpg

That is so "us". g
There are so few poses I will take a picture of, I think the challenge for him is to use a pose from his work situation that I will "shoot".

Last night, I went outside to take something of the quality of light.
About the only way this would be Quality of Light would be to stretch the
meaning way out and somehow compare my dog with the light of my life, or something. He is wonderful, he is one of the loves of my life, and I guess it
was meant to be that I get a portrait of him. I am so discouraged. I have seen no light anywhere. I know I have not moved from here, but on TV, the news, it is all just pictures, and in the newspaper, etc............ and, well, here is not the quality of light, he is the quality of my life, he and my other two dogs.

Ginger, you torture yourself unnecessarily. I think that shot qualifies for quality of light. The dog has a wonderful, soft golden light on it. The light adds something to the shot. Dunno about anyone else, but for me, a good part of why that shot works is because of the quality of the light.

But this is my family here

This is my favorite picture, ever, of me and my Yorkshire Terrier, Katie, it was a couple of years ago. I actually took it late at night. It is a small insignificant picture, but I love it.

Below this is a picture I love of my Skye, my heart dog, the male Corgi.
It is supposed to be a picture of my daughter's new floor and rug, but it sure looked good with the dogs on it.

http://gingerSnap.smugmug.com/photos/5841067-M.jpg

No tail, legs in the flying squirrel position, I love it!

This is in May. We had four dogs. I rehomed one, Summer. She is very happy as an only dog. She is the Corgi on the right. I felt terrible about rehoming her, but I was not giving her the attention she craved. This is all of us, Merry Chapel, Katie, Skye and Summer, and me, all together in February.
It was quite handful, but it was fun in its own way, having that many housedogs, a small townhouse, with only two hands myself.........

http://gingerSnap.smugmug.com/photos/3306816-M.jpg

That is it for tonight. Funny, I have not been taking as many pictures of my dogs lately. I did take one at the national park the other day, on a light finding expedition. Dogs can be on the grounds, but not inside the house. My husband rocked on the porch with the dogs who were on a leash. I turned around, and there was Skye at the door window.

That is it for tonight. Funny, I have not been taking as many pictures of my dogs lately. I did take one at the national park the other day, on a light finding expedition. Dogs can be on the grounds, but not inside the house. My husband rocked on the porch with the dogs who were on a leash. I turned around, and there was Skye at the door window.

gingerGinger I love your dog pictures, specially the last two.. they made me smile :D

It's hard to catch her with a "smile" or even a pleasant expression. She always looks so somber. She really smiles when I say "Let's go for a walk." and head up the hill. But, I havn't been able to climb the hill for a month.

Here kitty kitty kitty -

I had already snuck through one fence to get close enough, but still had to shoot through another chain-link; thats why your getting that white blotch on the mid-right. Whattta shame. Anyone think its fixable? I'm gonna try a few right things now. Seems like its going to be some tough patchwork.

I sat in an old beat up Land Rover for 3 hours in the rain, waiting for this leopard to get out of the tree, I only had a 55-200 lens at the time

Beautiful, Stan! I admire your patience. Most of the time, when I'm on a trip, I am always in the wrong place at the wrong time. Or, time is so limited that nothing good happens while I'm there.

Thank you Snapple, they are appalling shots, it makes you realize just how good wildlife photographers really are, given the time they have to take the shot before it is gone.

This one I had to post back to Sri Lanka for the driver, the guide, the hotel manager etc
