Ok here is the list of what I have now that I commonly bring along with me:
20D (possibly replaced with a 1D MK2 or it's better within 6 months)
70-200 IS L 2.8
50mm 1.8
16-35 2.8 L in the foreseeable future
P-2000
Laptop w/15 inch screen
extra Canon battery
3 CF cards
580ex in the foreseeable future
What is the recommended bag from Crumpler to get in that case? The bags are quite expensive in comparison with just a back pack or even a camera bag so I really am not interested in throwing away money on a backpack.

whickey and cox is a traditional type - will hold all your stuff.
i use the farmers double (http://www.crumplerbags.com/cartIndex.php?prodId=92&prodType=Bag&catId=22#) and totally love it.

2nd vote for the Farmers Double. Good size for the gear, fits on a plane well and its water proof.

No price difference between the two and the double body option in the Farmer's sounds good when/if I upgrade to whatever iteration of the Canon body is due out next. I will definately keep the 20D as my backup. My recent 20D blowup is a great learning example for me to have a second body on hand.

My carry gear is almost the same as you listed. 10D with grip, 70-200mm, 17-40mm, 8mm, 1.4x tc, flash, and small extras. All of this gear and my 15" Thinkpad fit in the Karachi Outpost. The fitment for all of the gear is a bit tight but I haven't found the need for a larger pack. As a bonus I can carry my monopod in the side pocket. I don't typically carry this much gear when walking around, it's much too heavy for all day use.

I have the CRUMPLER (Brians Hot Tub) it's almost as big as me :rofl
It's packed ready to go to USA next weekend, and in it I was able to put the following
Canon 20D
Canon 24mm
Canon 50mm
Canon 100mm
Canon 400mm
Canon 580 Flash
Canon 1.4 Ext
Canon Flash Ext Cord
4 CF Cards in a slim metal case
3 Filters in Cases
Remote Control
4 Batteries for the Camera
4 Batteries for the Flash
1 Flash Diffuser
All the Lens Hoods for all the Lenses and Soft Bags except for the 400mm
Sensor Brush Kit in its case
Brush/Lens Cleaner and cloths
I took the insert to carry the laptop out, cause there is no way I could carry all that plus a laptop, my bum is close enough to the ground now :lol4
