View Full Version : Cutting a roll of background paper?

Has anyone tried to cut a roll down some? I believe a standard 107" roll is about 10" too long.

Looking for anyone who has cut one successfully to share some tips.

Thanks,
John

Straight edge and razor knife would be the way to go. However, I'd suggest just rolling it up and clipping it to the stand--10' is not enough to do anything with but enough to give you some extra on the roll in the case something happens.

I guess I stated the problem wrong. The roll is too wide.

Oh. Good luck with that. I guess the way I'd do it it would be to find a flat place to roll it out and then use the straight edge, a ruler and the knife again.

I'd actually leave it rolled up to cut it if it is too wide. Measure it a few times to ensure you have the correct width and then with a straight razor slowly cut the paper. As you cut slowly you will just need to occasionally rotate the roll and follow the line. After you have the paper cut down to the tube you can then cut the tube after re-measuring to leave 2 inches of tube past the paper line.

Just take your time. :deal

The only reason I didn't suggest leaving it on the roll is that it may not be rolled on evenly and cutting it may leave you with a wavey edge.

Find a friend with a radial arm saw with a very very fine tooth blade, and just whack the end off the whole roll. Wrap masking tape around it at the cut mark to keep it from shredding.

Or you can call a blue printing place or even perhaps Kinkos/FedEx. If I remember right, they have the huge paper cutters, I used to get rolls of drawings cut that way. (I would print two up on the sheet and then have them cut the collected set)

make sure your roll is tightly wound and even, wrap low-tack painter's tape around the roll at the point of cutting. Use a hack-saw with a fine blade to cut right through the tape and the roll.

Thank you all. I will try one of these methods.

LOL

I had considered using the radial arm saw and envisioned the blade catching and spinning the roll, sometimes more power is Not the answer :wink
