View Full Version : Attempting to set up home page w/header navbar slideshow

I'm about to go crazy and I'm just beginning to set up my new site. I'm a current Zenfolio customer, but I really want to create a site that looks more professional with a header/navbar/slideshow, multiple tabs, etc. I'm a pretty techno savvy person, but I'm having issues and I'm just getting started. I started trying to read through Ivar Borst's CSS guide and all was well. I was on page 12 this link http://wiki.smugmug.net/download/attachments/754214/Customizing+SmugMug+Simplified.pdf?version=1 and I had downloaded the CSS edit add on for Firefox. I was attempting to follow the directions of editing the CSS for my page, but I cannot find a tab that has my user name "nicoleallen" on it. I'm wondering if this is because I'm using a "trial version" right now or if this is because I'm in the wrong spot or what? :dunno

I've been going to my homepage, then "control panel", then "advanced sitewide customization". However...these are the tabs I get...
I get one that says "smugmugblack...", "puresmugblack..." "embedded styles" and one that says "yui_core-eb7ea22af5c2c32cb494483fac37351a1.css". I do NOT see one that has my user name, as it says that I should and shows the example in the guide. I want to set up my homepage with a header, nav bar and slide shows.

I'm frustrated, because I was hoping to set up my new page while I was off work, but I can't really start until I make sure I'm editing the right page! I tried to e-mail help last night and then I got a message this morning that said I needed to post on this site. Now it's Christmas Eve...so no one is probably on here...ugggh! If anyone has a quick answer for this, I'd appreciate it!

Thanks!
Nicole

On your control panel, click on the PRO tab.

Then see the entry for "backprinting". hit Edit.

There should be a place where you put in your name in one of the fields.
------------
I am still on a trial too, but it's for Pro. hope this might help.

The user tab doesn't show because you have not added any CSS.
Control Panel > customize tab > "advanced site-wide customization".

In the top box, CSS (optional) add this.
/* temp comment to enable CSS tab to show in WebDEv */

This page is where you CSS, header html, footer html and javascript is
entered. It's also a good idea to click email button at the bottom so you
have a backup before changing anything.

Ask all your questions in this thread, it'll be your customizing thread
so you'll have a history of things done. We can change the title to something
like "nicole111 customization thread".

Hi Coolcat...that was not what I was looking for. I don't need to know how to print my name on the back of a photo. I'm trying to get my site up and running the way I want it.

Hi Allen. Thanks for the response. I don't feel like it really answers my question though. Did you look at the link I posted with the guide I was reading? It came off Smugmug's site. I added the Firefox add-on for the Web Developer Extension, like the guide told me to do. I got that just fine, but when I click on the icon for CSS and CSS Edit from that menu on Firefox, I get tabs at the bottom of my page, but not one that has my user name on it, like it says that I should. I tried adding what you said, but that still does not show a tab with my user name where I should edit it supposedly...

Then we can look at your site in the same tools you are using. Without that, we're just guessing.

Ok...here is my link

http://nicoleallen.smugmug.com/

Of course now that you mention that...I think maybe I was in the wrong spot to edit the CSS??? I did what I said before - going to control panel, advanced customization and then clicked on the "CSS" and "Edit CSS" in the Firefox add-on menu and I did not get a tab that had my user name on it. However, if I just go to my site and I click on it that way...and do the same thing, I do get a tab that says, "user_nicoleallen...." is that the tab where I need to type all this code in?:scratch

Info appreciated!

Thanks,
Nicole

Hi Joe,

I just looked at your site. That's the exact type of thing that I want to set up for myself. I'm going to work on the basics first, but then I want to know about the music! Do you have a link about adding that?

By the way..I love the girl in the red dress...beautiful!

I was trying to figure out the difference in the way you set up the two pages "galleries" and "portfolio". Is the "portfolio" just sample pics of your favs that you want people to look at? Are they also in your "galleries"?

I also love the girls by the corn jumping in your blog. Really cute. What state is that? Looks an awful lot like my homestate of SD or nearby NE or IA! I live in CO now, but am visiting and we're stuck in a blizzard at the moment. Oh well...after I shoot some snow shots, it will give me time to try to set up this site! I've been saying that I was going to make the switch to Smugmug for the last six months.

Look HERE (http://designshack.co.uk/articles/html/four-quick-and-easy-ways-to-embed-mp3-files-into-your-site) for a few ways to add music...and ask lots of questions! the music on my site comes from my slideshow, so its only on my homepage.

My "galleries" page just show's all my categories that I have set-up, my "portfolio page is just a gallery page that potential clients can look at to see my work.
