Nov-22-2009, 10:27 AM
Welcome to Round #86 of the Dgrin Mini-Challenges.
This challenge is open to any Dgrin member. It will run from now, Sunday November 22, 2.00pm EST time, to Sunday December 6, 2.00pm EST (2 weeks).
Your Judges:
- Lizzard_nyc (Liz)
- adbsgicom (Andrew)
What this challenge is about:
As fall turns to winter here in the United States, a great many preparations are being made to celebrate with family. We all remember the great times of the event and record those zealously, but as we near this time of Thanksgiving in the U.S., we want to record and remember those who make family gatherings really happen. Our theme this is:
Preparations
Whether it is Thanksgiving, Christmas, Ramadan, Passover, Festivus, or any gathering of family and friends, the celebration doesn't happen without preparation. Send in your images that capture the care, the emotion, or the frenzy of preparing for our celebrations. Whether it is getting the table just so, or nearly killing someone for a "Tickle Me Elmo", show us what goes into making the celbration happen.
So find the memories from before the event or shoot something new. Submit your entries to immortalize those who made the day special behind the scenes!! :clap :barb :clap :bow :clap
*Guidelines:
The entrant must be the sole photographer of the entry.
Enter 1-3 photos and put them in a single post. You can edit or swap out your entries as often as you like, up to the deadline.
Either embed your image in the thread or, if you must, supply a link to it. Keep in mind, however, most people don't want to click to open photos hosted elsewhere (eg on your website).
Try to resize your photos prior to posting so they're sized appropriately for viewing without having to scroll (~800 pixels on the longest side works best.)
Give each image you enter a title.
Don't be hesitant! Just do it! Be in it and share!
Also, especially non-contestants:
Feel free to share your thoughts and reactions to the entries which excite you. Enjoy discussion with members about their images. This is not just an entry thread, but a thread open for the participation of anyone who would like to contribute, in a way appropriate to the spirit and purpose of the Mini-Challenges

Andrew and I come from two totally different backgrounds and probably couldn't be more different, yet we have this in common "preparations for the holidays"--so it's as though this co-chairing was meant to be.
I'm looking forward to the shots ranging from basting the turkey to flexing your muscles in preparations for the "feats of strength" (see festivus).
I look forward to being introduced to some of your pre holiday customs and preparations.
Please please comment on each other's photos on this round as well--
LET THE CHALLENGE BEGIN!

This is a great choice of theme, Liz and Andrew!:thumb It's topical, inclusive of all our lifestyles, and yet so personal to our experiences! I really look forward to seeing all those moments behind the scenes before the curtain rises on the event, whatever the seasonal celebration. Themes like this - our lives - so suit the Minis, I think. Wonderful! I wish challenge #86 a memorable two weeks. I'm sure it will become part of the Preparations for a few Dgrinners this year!:wink:D:clap

bd, I think it's great you noticed this Mini. I have had a wish that more " PJ/Streeties" would get involved with the Minis, and with themes about our lives like this one they have their chance, and have lost their excuses!:wink:D It would make a really interesting balance with the Sharp Shooters, which typically tends towards different techniques than in PJ/Street.

It's ok, it doesn't have to be just about Thanksgiving and it doesn't have to be current.
The gift wrapping shot is definately part of "preparations"--I particularly like that you chose not to do it in color.

Neil, it does not necessarily need to be a holiday, per se:
Whether it is Thanksgiving, Christmas, Ramadan, Passover, Festivus, or any gather of family and friends, the celebration doesn't happen without preparation. Send in your images that capture the care, the emotion, or the frenzy of preparing for our celebrations. Whether it is getting the table just so, or nearly killing someone for a "Tickle Me Elmo", show us what goes into making the celbration happen.
Aside from my typo (which I will fix shortly), it is any gathering of family and friends. The key, is showing preparation....

Thank you. My grandmother has always loved to put together puzzles. My mother has now picked up this tradition. (Both are in the photo). I wanted to pick something different than food preparation, thus the puzzle shots. It's a great way to visit with family or friends while creating something everyone can remember. Especially if you glue them and put into a frame.

If you had a bunch of family or friends getting it ready, it might be clearer. The theme though is preparation for a family gathering or event, so the car is already prepared (or awaiting preparation), so I think this is lying outside of the competition. There are some folks on OCS that would love your shot, though....

Fad2blk--you can replace the third one when you get another shot to take its place--like I said the shot is great--just when you get another one more appropriate for the theme, exchange them.

I'm glad you posted these and that you pointed out this was an everyday dinner--these can be special too, especially if they are few and far between.
Life's so busy sometimes that we can't make time for everyday dinners.

Nicely done, especially for a cell phone shot--I like the grainy effect the cell phone lends to the shot.

Thanks Liz! I've been having fun with the new camera phone and cool apps available for it. It was nice to be able to spend time with the folks for Thanksgiving.
We have lots to be thankful for, not the least of which is mom and dad's new home and kitchen (after a tornado destroyed their previous house) and the miracle that my mom survived the direct hit with nothing but a few bumps and scrapes.
Here's a shot of the old kitchen after the twister. Ironically, mom was baking bread just before it hit - preparing the dough and then switching gears to her last-second emergency preparations by wrapping herself in a quilt and jumping into the coat closet before the storm blew the house away!
The bread was still warm in the oven

Every year Muslims around the world celebrate Eid-ul-Azha by performing ritual performed by God's beloved Prophet Abraham Peace be upon him, by sacrificing a goat. Meat is distributed among neighbors, poor and part of it kept for self consumption, all relatives joing together for dinner and BBQ. And oh yeah this is self portrait with our goat while on our way back to home from market.

And oh yeah this is self portrait with our goat while on our way back to home from market.Shot with cell phone
Awais, I love it, it has so much charisma!:D I'm glad that you've contributed something from the Eid al Adh (as they say here).
Hope all is well with you!

Awais,
A self-portrait to end all self-portraits.
There is so much to this shot that I like, not the least of which is the goat and the look on its face plus the ornaments he/she is wearing.
You have added a different touch to this thread and educated me a little as well.
Thanks for adding your shot to this thread.

Holy sokatash, as I think I can remember a cartoon character from my boyhood exclaiming in an American accent, that is about as complete as destruction can get! Amazing to see how the twister is so clean and precise cutting it's way through. What an amazing experience for your mom. I have been through 3 hurricanes (cyclones we call them in Australia), I know the kind of power. The comfort zone of the warm kitchen with the smell of cooking food of your first pic is all the more precious. As they say, count your blessings!

Benjer, amazing story and glad everyone was able to be together for the holiday. In the destruction picture, the mixer left standing is incredible.
Awais, great SP!! Thanks for posting.

It's been a while since I've been able to participate in one of these challenges so here it goes. Over the past few years, my family has put together puzzles during the holidays. My mother will frame them and put them around her house for the holidays.
My family has the same tradition!

Especially around football games in the US, there is a traditional called "tailgating", which was a sort of party in the parking lot at the stadium where you ate lunch before the game started. Like everything else in the US, what likely started off in a sort of sensible measured way, has grown to insane levels where people bring grills and smokers and prepare huge banquets, even in the freezing cold. Here in Texas, the Big 12 College Football championship is this weekend in Dallas, and it should be about 20 degrees (F) when folks are out tailgating before the game. In Texas, that is extreme cold, but that won't stop anyone (or very few) from being out there partying it up in the parking lot!
