Alien Bee Parabolic

I wanted to get some advice, I am starting out and shooting in the garage so space is crucial. I am looking at buying the Calumet Genesis 200 with the softbox 24 x 32 but I have been hearing a lot of buzz about the AB parabolic device. My questions are: Does anyone know if it will fit with the Genesis, it looks like a regular umbrella so I would imagine it should fit. 2nd question, has anyone use the parabolic light mod. system? 3rd question, what do you think is going to product the best light for portraits (softbox or parabolic light mod)?

There is no one best light or modifier for portraiture, the same as there is no single lighting setup.

I do recommend a 36" x 36", double-diffused softbox for many key light applications in portraiture. (Even larger for 3/4 length and full-length poses and groups.) The 60" SoftLighter is also very nice. A large shoot-through umbrella is not bad at all.

I would use a parabolic reflector for certain fill applications and as a key light for an older male face when I might want to exaggerate the ruggedness of the face, for instance. The parabolic should produce reasonably parallel light and somewhat strong shadows, probably not as conducive for females and children where softer shadows is usually desired.

Thanks Ziggy, I always respect your expertise. I heard the larger softbox would not be ideal for the power of the Genesis 200 (right now I can not afford the 400) so that is why I was thinking about the Parabolic. I might just go with the old umbrellas.
