I have no idea what im doing wrong lately. All these shots were at about 20 feet with 2 different L lenses. Its clearly a focus problem but its really giving me the ..well you know.

Ive hit the doldrums shooting wise you could say. I took better photos than these with my old P&S.

Anyway...

Great birds Hummungus. I love the beautiful colors. #3 is sharp and so is the Kookaburra. It's hard to focus when you have branches in front of the bird. Sometimes the camera finds the wrong thing to focus on. Did you have it on "spot" focus? Those feathers look real sharp on the grey "football" sized guy.

I feel for you on the focus problem. I have the same problem. I think it must be a camera shake problem with me. With the zoom magnification comes movement magnification. I almost took out my old Olympus the other day. These are really not bad. Are they in the wild? What exotic birds you have there! :thumb

Thanks SA. They are in a huge avery just out of town but they are all all in the bush around here...just too much air mixed in with them to photograph.

I think i have done something in the cameras focus...i only get the 1 red light flashing in the centre instead of the 9 (i think) i should have. Still cant find the manual after my house move.

Gus these are excellent shots and man they are colorfull birds you have. Most birds here are so muted compared to yours. Great series, thanks for sharing them. :thumb

Hey Gus,

You sure have some colorful birds. The skinny black & white bird is a stilt. L liked the turkey shot best. Whenever I'm in a slump (like now) I just keep on shooting and things come together

Gus Gus, the manual for the 20D can be found here online as a PDF

Cannon is pretty good about keeping their electronic files and firmware up to date.:thumb

:agree with Harry. I find myself not in a slump but one of those, Geeezz You got some great equipment and your shots stink, thing :D.

Harry along with others had warned me about this and so I just keep shooting and pushing forward. Oh and reading and rereading the manual as well!!

Your turkey shot is crisp and well exp :thumb
I hope that helps just a little :thumb

It really is humbling when we have to learn over and over that cameras and lenses are not the limiting factors, but photographic skill and knowledge and effort. When we do finally get really great equipment, then we have to acknowledge our own complicity in not getting great images consistently. :D:D I'm glad to hear that I am not alone in this experience.

Hang in there guys - try to find some great light and then look for subjects. Birds aren't always that easy either, though Harry always makes it look like it is.

Thanks guys ...PF is probably onto me re the light issues. I dont think i realised just how much light affects focus.

Thanks for that link PF...i had found 2 but they were dead.
Anyway ive got the big race this week-end & it will be great light. Its such a change to have a winter sun with a nice angle even for a short while. 9 months of the year its directly overhead & punching down on you.

Thanks
