View Full Version : Why is cropping irreversible?

Or: Why is the original file cropped?
We can do a temporary Virtual Crop™ :wink for printing, so why can't this be done for display copies? If that's impossible, why not just permanently crop all the display copies, so that the original file stays untouched, ready to be re-cropped in a different way?

It's one of those things, Malte, designed into the system. Could it be changed? Maybe. Thanks!

MalteOdd. I answered this, but don't see my reply anywhere now. Oh well. So I get around this by making a copy of any photo I want to edit (crop or color-change). It's a quick process to copy them. Then I do my edit on the copy, and "hide" the first (original) to the public. It's a little clumsy maybe, & you've probably thought of it already. But at least it works & I still have a handy original to use if I want it. Lately I've also been using JFriend's method that places a red "X" on hidden photos so that they're easier to spot.

I hadn't thought of that particular workaround actually. Far too hard to keep track of though, for me. I have thought of uploading everything again, into year/month/day galleries like the folders I have on my computer. Have those hidden and apply crops and edits to the others. This can't be what anyone wants though and I doubt if it falls within the acceptable use policy.
