I thought using atl+0149 would give me a dot (bullet) but I keep getting a box. Can anyone help out?

I've cleared cache twice...
check it out, I added the SM footer back in so we could see the difference.

I'm officially stumped:dunno It could be a font issue. If the font that the browser chooses on your particular computer doesn't have a bullet character in the font character set, then you may not see it. You might try setting a specific font for the footer that you know you have on your computer and that you know the bullet is in the character set for that font. I'm seeing bullet here on Vista with both FF3.5 and IE7.

Anthony, your system is limited and doesn't have that font.

Nice idea, but I added the SM footer back in and used it to check the font of the SM vs the font family on my footer and they're both the same.

Nice idea, but I added the SM footer back in and used it to check the font of the SM vs the font family on my footer and they're both the same. You are using the "Gentium" font in your CSS which is not something I have on my system and it appears to have a very basic character set (probably with no bullet). I would say there's a good chance that you have the Gentium font on your computer and it's listed first in your CSS so that's what your browser is picking and it does not have the bullet character. Something is clearly different about your particular system because all of us are seeing the bullet.

I get that concept, but my CSS code sets the font for the body of the site to the same font family and the SM footer DOES show the dots. Only my creating is showing the box instead.

Setting the font at the body level will NOT override font specifications set a lower levels in the CSS. Without seeing your particular computer, I can't explain why the Smugmug footer would behave differently - perhaps they have different font specifications so your Gentium font isn't active there - I have no idea.
It would be a very simple experiment to set the font in your footer to something that does have a bullet character (perhaps Arial or Helvetica), then verify that the intended font is actually active and see what happens. Other than that, the issue appears to be specific to your machine so there's not much else we can do.
Or, if you want to avoid the issue entirely, stop using a bullet character and use a small graphic instead.

OK, played with th CSS... when I switch to a font-size of 12px the dot turns into a box... it shows correctly at 15px or larger... ideas?

OK, Looks like SM has various "classes" wrapped up in the SM footer code. "text" is one of them. My CSS only changes the "text" to my font-family, not the "non-text" or special characters like the •. In "times new roman", the font my computer defaults to, the • is not round until size 15px. Therefore I added a span and specified the size of the dot. If someone could take a look and see that the footer looks OK on their machine I'd appreciate it.
