ok, i know this has to be somewhere else or i just dreamed it ..but is there free software out there that will give you a true shutter count of your camera? i have been given a canon 1d original and i was just wondering how much it had been used.. cosmetically it looks great.. no wear or scratches..

You can check it if you've got Photoshop(CS2 and above I believe).

Thing is counts can be reset, messed up by putting in another CF card that has a higher shot(file number) count on it.

Best part about the 1 series, you can play in the rain and not give a hoot(using the proper lenses of course), and they can take a beating and come back for seconds.

Not all cameras record the total shot/actuation numbers to the EXIF. In Canon I believe only the 1D/1Ds series cameras record the numbers in the EXIF. Canon service centers can access the data for other cameras (recorded internally).

Nikon has more cameras that record the actuations to EXIF, and many/most of the current models do record the actuations.

I honestly don't know if other brands record the data or not.

This one even tells you it doesn't work on the original 1D.



Another thing that would work is if you use FireFox you can get the Exif Viewer add on, it'll tell you the count on a 1 series but it's kinda buried and easily over looked.

If your still having trouble post a pic and I'll tell you the count. Just make sure that when your saving it from whatever editing program you use to use the "save as" option. The regular "save" and "save for web" strips the exif in favor of the smaller file size.
