Bahia de Los Angeles, Mexico. #1

I just got back from my trip to Mexico yesterday, and let me tell you: wow :D . Honestly, I think Bahia de Los Angeles is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been - and the people there are amazing.

For those who don't know, Bahia de Los Angeles is a part of Mexico that borders the Sea of Cortez. Life there is very slow-paced, nothing like what you see when you first enter Mexico (Tijuana, Ensenada, etc).





The Sea of Cortez is well known for its beautiful wildlife, of which it comes in abundance. Huge humbolt squid, parrot fish, whale sharks, and delicious delicious clams are but a few of the highlights. One of the reasons I love the place is because it is not yet commercialized: almost everybody I ran into was a resident of the area, giving me a great chance to practice my Spanish!

I'll post more about my experience in Bahia de Los Angeles soon, including more photos! In the photo above, I wanted to show the peace and calm of the place, compared to the hustle and bustle of college life back at UC San Diego.

The shot was taken at around 5:00 AM. I set my timer for 4:30 AM every morning so that I could catch the sunrise (in Bahia, the sunrises are the main show - which is completely different from San Diego, where the sun sets over the ocean).

Technical info: shot with Canon 1ds and 17-40L on a tripod. F16 and a long exposure (I think 10 seconds), bracketed one shot for foreground and one shot for background.

Hello,

Wonderful colors and tones, the rocks really lead one's eye from the bottom to the top, with a great silohuette (sp?) along the way.

Only criticism might be the upper right hand corner - if looks like strong vingetting, although I don't think it is because this isn't mirrored in the upper left hand corner. Wonderful image, but somehow this corner doesn't look quite as I might expect. maybe it is just the way the sky was, and if that's the case then never mind. :):

Hmm, after looking critically at the two versions (with vignette and vignette corrected), I actually find myself liking the one with a bit of vignette more. It may not be as natural as what I saw, but I feel it compliments the mood of the image more to have a little bit of dark seeping in.

Hey Ian! Thanks for droppin by! The bird was 100% intentional, I saw it from where I was taking photos and moved to compose for the bird. Luckily it took a while before it realized it was on candid camera!

Thank you so much Skippy! You know, I showed my little brother some of your macro work (he's seven, and very into bugs). He loves it!

I myself am not as bug crazy as he is, but seeing him light up at all of those wonderful bugalicious details makes my day!

THanks to everybody who responded! I don't have time to respond to everyone (yes, I'm terrible like that)... but I want ya'll to know that I read every response. I really appreciate having some feedback on the work!

If people like this shot, I strongly suggest you check out Joe Cornish's work. He has a book called First Light which has honestly opened my eyes to landscape photography in a way that no other author has, including Ansel Adams. This book walks you through each shot that Cornish takes, and it walks you through his mindset in taking a landscape - plus, his work is phenomenal. The book costs about $20 on Amazon... it is one of the best book investments I've made.

This is a wonderful photo and getting up early was certainly worth the effort.

The beautiful tones of the sun rising in the background and the long exposure of the water in the foreground present an exquiste photo.
