First one seems pretty far off....But the second one you definitely got in close. I might have moved around the subjects a bit. But definitely a good first try.:thumb

Thanks.

First one was about 6-7' behind the folks at 30mm (full-frame). It does feel far off, though.

Second one didn't have a lot of mobility, there was a little fence there; the guy in the tank top was running a petting zoo; I would have squashed a bunny if I was more to the left...

Tina

Well, you're sort of a ringer.:rofl But these all demonstrate why we should shoot close. Very well done. And who can believe the news about Martin? So sad.
BTW, folks, the "hippy" in Tina's last shot is none other than Kyle Cassidy (http://www.kylecassidy.com/), one of the more imaginative shooters around.

:rofl Yes she did indeed. I actually had no intention of shooting her as she wasn't all that interesting. But, the closer we got to one another (she was walking toward me on the sidewalk), the more nervous she seemed to get about my camera. I figured she was asking for it. :D

Thanks, B.D., but I hope there is another definition of "ringer":

Main Entry: 1ring·er
Pronunciation: \ˈriŋ-ər\
Function: noun
Date: 15th century
1 : one that sounds especially by ringing
2 a (1) : one that enters a competition under false representations (2) : IMPOSTER, FAKE

Probably the former.....:D

I didn't realize that the word actually carried defintions of deceit before looking it up; i.e., that a 'ringer' would be someone very skilled is posing as someone less so to gain the upper hand. I always thought that it meant someone very skilled. Something new learnt today....

Thank you. I think it may be easier to get up close and personal with the camera than to post here and await your verdict... :giggle

Thank you for challenging us to improve our skills, get out of our comfort zone, AND for taking the time to critique our efforts.

B.D.,
I'm guessing you didn't comment on my entry because it is so similar to my Sukkah post, same subjects, same time, just different shot and I already know the lighting is all wrong. Just wondering.

Tina,
I just wanted to say that I really like the shot with the cops. All of them looking at the one guy except for the one cop who is giving you the eye, very intense shot.

Allow me to take back my comment abt the first one - it's a lot better than I thought at first glance. The problem was the ill-conceived marriage of lens and shooting distance. Cropped right and left, that's a nicely composed, good shot.:bow

Thank you. Despite often being of a differing opinion, I am learning quite a bit from you and the others in these discussions.

I ran a quick distortion correction and exported just to attach here, but you can't fix everything in PS. The butts aren't as big now, but I should have dropped to a knee for the shot to get even distortion, then I might have had a better end result.

Not at all! And forgive me for not commenting sooner:bow Yes, it has some of the same technical problems, but this wasn't a technical test - it was a torture test and you passed with flying colors - especially knowing how painful it is for you.:rofl :rofl :clap :clap :clap You got close - you shot 'full frontal' - you did precisely what you were supposed to do! And, without the technical problems, you might have an interesting image. (And try cropping a bit on this one.)

Definitely the former. And I, too, didn't know about the deceit definition, although it does make sense. I've just always thought it referred to having a player, competitor, who really skewed:wink the odds.

Two nice shots, Karin - Second one isn't quite face-on :rofl, but what the heck...It's a nicely composed and exposed image.

The first I would have shot from the opposite side - that way we'd see most of the kid's faces, and have a bit better lighting...The story here is how the kids react to the fire guy....

Nice work!:clap

Aren't you the one who took B.D.'s workshop? Boy, it really shows! You paid attention in class. Fantastic "getting close" shots! My favorite is the guy reading.

Virginia, these are really nice. I especially like:

http://www.twocitiesphotography.com/photos/674356230_A9GwR-S.jpg

I've tried a number of times to get a good shot like this, but never got one this good. It speaks volumes.

I second Tina's point that B.D.'s workshop really helped you.

You (and B.D.) have inspired me to grab my camera and cane and go out and try again.

Great job, Virginia - Like just about everyone else, I think #2 is the strongest of the three shots - the expression is terrific. But all three are 'up close and personal,' which was the goal. And I am particularly impressed because I know that working this way is not your cup of tea. :clap :clap :clap

LOVE seeing the results of this exercise, even though time-constraints kept me from even THINKNIG about trying it (I'm not sure if that was a blessing or not - on the one hand, I didn't have to get over myself and figure out how to brave the scary stuff; on the other, I feel like it would have been "good for me" and I'm really enying the results the rest of you got :D)
