Nice zoom effect.
The light to the left is like an arrow pointing you at the subjects.

It is a zoom effect. I think made easier by a trombone zoom (push-pull) instead of the twist zoom.

How: Standing with lens in hand as they approached, zoomed to 200 and as they walk pressed shutter and zoomed out.

Of course the funky light is my homemade light box on a stick wielded by my assistant.
