View Full Version : Rarely do i ask shooting advise
Why ? well im happy with what i do & quite stubbon....im over 40 so i can say that.
But im here asking...am i getting this right ?
Does this photo look as it should at these settings ? Im not interested in WB or the wonderful wonderful world of sharpening.
Its just not ringin' my bell thats all.....is it that i had massive movement & sound at the time of the shot & now its a quiet photo with no movement ?
Lens was 50mm f1.8

Possibly an unexpressive photo. Maybe you really have to have a facial expression in this type of shot showing the power of the noise :dunno

I was going to say, I know what he's doing and the emotion that goes with it.
But the facial would tell someone who didn't know way more about the piccy.

Technically I think it's a good shot. However, I have a pretty simple suggestion that may improve the composition and the impact...
What *I* feel is that there is too much space around the guitar player. Crop it down tight on him in portrait orientation and see if that helps any. Since you've already cut the head off the neck of the guitar, by bringing the viewer in tighter you would better capture the sense of intensity *imho*.
give it a try...

I agree, thats better. I found the background too cluttered in the original. This is better. Maybe even blur the background a bit to focus the eye on the player?

I dunno, gus. I think the missing face is a big deal, because the back of his head takes up so much of the real estate. The guitar bit's very cool and so's the angle. I'm sure you're right, a slightly slower shutter speed would have given it a bit of motion blur, might have captured what your were feeling at the time?

lol, ask a guitar player :D where's all the action?? where does the action come from, most visually? Probably from the left hand :D And that's just the hand that's invisible in this scene...
something like this (supreme fast finger action :wink):

The left hand is often something to use to show movement/action...
It's a nice shot though ol' man :wink

Hmm what I find strange is the DOF and relative motionless capture with 1/60th and F 2.0. A small reduction in DOF and some motion blur and poof this pic comes to life. I am not familiar with what your canon gives you at F 2.0, but my D70 has less DOF at 2.0.
Also, I know your EXIF shows no flash, but was there other flash (photographers) or strobed stage light? At 1/60 the motion blur in the hands should be a lil more unless this was just a dead moment top of stroke kind of thing. (Hmm looking at it seems like he is 'plucking' the guitar, so movement would be short and snappy as is)

Looks very clean and frozen... not the kind of shot I would expect to see from a rock stock guitar player. I repeat what others suggested already: give us a face, and maybe a bit more movement in the picture.
Since you ask us for advize I guess that you are not happy with it either...
What do you miss in this picture? What would make it a winner for you?

Humungus,
I was looking for something that would let us feel the intimacy of the artist and his guitar. I think this cropping gives me more of that feeling. I also corrected slightly for color-balance.
