Spent some time at the park with my son Riley today.

I took this photo which I really love. I am interested in feedback on both the composition and my B/W conversion.

Hi ..

I think the conversion to black and white is excellent--enhances his dimples, eyes and the shape of his great smile.

The composition is pleasant and very inviting.

Lovely photo of Riley.

David - I can't find anything I think you can improve upon. This is a beautiful picture! :thumb

David, I am about ready to learn better blk/white conversion. Could you just list your steps, please.

I like the shot. :thumb I can't see anything I would want to change. Great capture of his mood and super DOF.

Very nice.:thumb

Thanks Michal, Angelo, Ginger and Khaos for your critics.

I wasn't happy with my standard channel mixer B&W conversion, so I tried something different and I was really happy with the results.

ginger, here's basically what I did. Note I can't tell you the exact steps since I used the Gimp not Photoshop and in most cases the process isn't the same.

1. Started with the original image
2. Converted it to LAB
3. Remove the A and B channels, leaving me with just the luminousity channel
This where I am not sure what happens for PS, with the Gimp when I do a convertion to LAB my image is greyscale, but I don't think this is the case for PS.
4. Adjust levels and curves
5. Add some grain

Cheers,

David

What a nice happy little guy!

I like your BW conversion, the composition and I really like the lighting. The only thing I would possibly change is to straighten the picture so the bars on the fence are vertical.

Excellent portrait.
