Ok I'm confused here :scratch yeah right Skippy :rofl

I had a look at the Canon chart from B&H and it says that AUTO Focus is possible with the Canon 400mm F5.6, with Canon 1.4 Ext attached ... but I've read that it doesn't work unless you tape the pins :dunno in other posts on the net.

Sooooooooo what's the go here :dunno does it or doesn't it work :huh
I'm soooooooooooo confused ........but really happy :rofl :rofl can't help meself I excited about my trip, excited about the new lens, I'm just a happy person in general.

Or..........am I just reading something into the chart that isn't there :scratch

Here's the link to the chart from B&H.

No it will not work with the Canon 1.4.
I have read also if you tape the pins it will.I havent tried that.
Some use a different brand extender and it will work.
It works on my 1D MK2 with the center focus point.

It does say it works doesn't it ?? :scratch
But reality is it doesnt right .......oh well not worry it still works for Manual Focusing, just not Auto :D

Thanks for the reply John, but ya know I wanted you to tell me it does AUTO :D

Skippy - the answer is that it depends on your camera body. The 20D will AF only with an f5.6 or faster lens. Thus the 400f5.6 + 1.4 Tx becomes an f8 llens and will not AF with a 20D. A 1DMkll or a 1DsMKll AF's at f8, so they WILL AF with the center AF point with that combination. I think this is why you are getting conflicting information from the Canon website.

Some of the Tamron or other vendors telextenders do not communicate the lens apeature to the body and so they apparently do work with f5.6 lenses. Wierd, huh !!??

I have the older Tamron 1.4x. The new version is the SP model.

The old one is cheap, about $70 and does not talk to the camera about itself, the new SP model does. Thus the camera doesn't know about it and it doesn't stop down from a max 5.6 to an 8. Thus autofocusing still works on a 20D.

I've used it with 400 5.6

It does, to me, tend to be a bit soft. The 400 is usually tack sharp. With the extender, you still get sharp pictures, but not as sharp without it.

Here are a few examples:

THere is a digital camera white balance for sunlight, would you use the same setting for moonlight since the moon is really reflecting light from the sun?

Having looked at the b&h this AM, my 300, with IS, is about the same price as the f4 5.6 without IS.

The book I am reading says that for birds a 400 is best, probably lots of reasons. One being that 5.6 on it does not have the same amt of lack of DOF that 5.6 does, with a 1.4 (bringing that to 420mm), does. I am not technical, but even I understood it when I read it.

However, the book said, Moose's book, that a 300 was better for large game as it does not compress things to the degree a 400 does. Moose said that one does not want to compress a Moose's body into his ass (he didn't quite put it that way, but that is as I understand it).

Now I read that my Canon 1.4 wouldn't work with the 400, would have been cool if it did.

I was going to read the reviews on FM of the 400 (cheapie f 5.6), what do you all think?

And I would have to sell all of my stuff, before buying the 400. Anyone who shoots mooses want to swap, in general?

ginger, take a look at daniella's work (www.pbase.com/zylen) she shoots with a 400 f/5.6L all the time. sometimes with the cheapo tamron 1.4x, most times not...

here's one i particularly like: http://www.pbase.com/zylen/image/41050572

and another: http://www.pbase.com/zylen/image/41220294

i think the 400 5.6 will be sharper than your 300 + tc combo :deal
