No tripod, just set ISO to get enough light and the aperture to get the needed shutter speed.
I generally use single point focus and try to make sure it's on the eye(s). No recompose, I'll rotate the point if needed.
Post processing involves the Shadow\Highlight tool, but not always. This helps to allow you decide the depth of shadow and makes it possible to bring more detail out especially when there is a lot of feather texture. I only use curves if the AWB was screwed up by the camera.
Oh, and I take about 5 shots per bird.:D

I do like to get something other than most of my shots, just a bird sitting there. Seeing any kind of action makes it more interesting. It just takes time staring at them, which I could do if I was able to retire, which I can't because I need money. Stupid money.:wxwax
