It came out darker than I wanted... any input would be appreciated.

Oh my gosh -that is hilarious! What a great idea!
As far as technicalities, I think the entire thing would need to be in better focus to make it really stand out. And the mouth perhaps more so (in focus) than the can, maybe? But both better focus I think would help.

Ditto on the focus. Not sure about the bright red mouth interior, but perhaps that makes it amusing and not gross...

How about a photoshop version where I can more selectively control focus between the can and the mouth?

I too prefer this version.
It did get me to thinking about if there would be a way to do one with a bottle rather than a can. Most of you have probably heard the saying about a coke bottle quality lens.

I'm going to buck the trend and go with the first version... Perhaps to overcome the focus issue you could PS two exposures (one for the can, one for the mouth). The second one looks very staged (well duh!!) and suffers as the perspective on the can and the mouth are different. (Camera POV) Maybe it's just my weakness for the Holga look in the first shot that gets me (if you could squeeze out just a bit more DOF)
Either way, you have struck a nerve here (and great execution on an original idea!):thumb
