is there any reason why I can't use the caption field on a given image as a link?

Specifically, to a paypal order or external order,eg,
click this to order a framed print?

I don't see why you couldn't. I use the caption to link to wallpaper on my site (www.photokandy.com/wallpaper), and it works just fine.
