View Full Version : Managing Big Panos w/CS4 Ext & LR 2 64 bit

EDIT: I figured out an answer to my original question, but came up with another one asking why CS4 was making such huge result files after making a pano.
I'm playing around with making panoramas using these two tools, and in a number of cases when I go to save the file, it's size has exceeded 2G.
I read advice to make the channels 8 bit instead of 16 bit, and that's worked fine, but I'm wondering what's the best way to manage big pano imagery between these two applications.
The source material for these images are JPEGs.
OS: Vista Home Premium 64 bit.

You don't say what OS you are running. If you are running 64b applications, a 2g file shouldn't be a problem.

I don't know if the CS4 I'm running is 64 bit, all I know is CS4 is complaining about the file size when I go to save the pano.

Hmmm.... I told CS4 to save the file anyway, and got a 3G result file which LR worked fine with - so the question's resolved as far as that's concerned.
What I am wondering about is why CS4 is producing pano files that are several orders of magnitude bigger than the source files they're made from? :huh
If I could keep the target size smaller, then the whole question goes away. I'd also use up quit a bit less storage space. :thumb

You are flattening the pano before saving it aren't you?
Are you saving psd files, or jpgs?
> 2 Gb files are really huge files, and that makes me think you still have all your layers present. I have panos that start as 1-2 Gb but are much smaller when finally saved, and these start as 5-10 frames from a 50D or a 5DMkII.

I've been quitting CS4, it asks if I want to save it, and then writes a .tif file.
It sounds like there's something I need to learn about CS4.

Are you sure it"s not just a warning?

Are you sure it"s not just a warning? When I quit, it asks if I want to save the file (which I guess you could call a warning), and I answer 'yes', after which it writes a .tif file. If the resulting file's > 2G, then I've gotten a warning that it may not be compatible with older .tif viewers.
I found the 'flatten' image button - it's a big help already. :barb
