View Full Version : Is your custom domain busted?
Andy

Hi folks, a while back when we added Akamai for speed boost, we announced to you with custom domains that improperly configured domains may cease to work or show issues in the future.
Welcome to 'the future'!
But NO WORRIES, if you've got site nav issues due to your domain not being set up right, we can help, and really fast!
If your domain is being used to point at another site that is not hosted by SmugMug, stop. Do not make the changes below. All that needs to be done is to remove the custom domain from your SmugMug control panel. That should correct the problem. If your domain is supposed to point at SmugMug, proceed with the steps below.
We have more information on the correct domain setups here:
http://www.smugmug.com/help/professional-accounts
In a nutshell, to set up the CNAME correctly you need the following:
1. for the www host point a CNAME record to domains.smugmug.com
2. also add or change an A record to 208.79.45.23 if you want people to be able to
access your site without www. Some domains allow you to use an @ sign
for the host to indicate that it is empty. Check the help at your
domain host to see what they recommend.
If you use subdomain.yourdomain.com instead of www.yourdomain.com ,
point the subdomain with a CNAME record to domains.smugmug.com and don't
add an A record as it isn't needed.
Do not use your full domain in the CNAME unless the domain host tells
you to. If you do, you will end up with
www.yourdomain.com.yourdomain.com or something similar.
Do not put in the yournickname.smugmug.com address as the destination no
matter how tempting that may be. Do not use forwarding or redirects
either. None of these will work correctly.
You may find that you will need to edit or delete any existing www or @
records if there are any for your site. It will take 24-48 hours for
the changes to propagate around the internet.
If you have not already done so, go to your SmugMug control panel and
enter the custom domain on the settings tab. That is all there is too
it. If you have problems, please let me know.
If you are stuck, write our Support Heroes (http://www.smugmug.com/help/emailreal) ATTN: Doc/Nick in the subject line and send us your domain host UserID and set the password
to something temporary like SmugTemp123. We will log in and make the
changes or check the settings for you. When we are done you can reset the
password.
1. the name of your domain registrar
2. login name to your domain
3. change the password for your domain to smugtemp{insert_4_random_digits}
Once we have made the changes, we will let you know so that you could
change your password back.
Questions? We're here for you :ear

Yep, my tutorial is out of date. I just found that GoDaddy changed the layout this weekend. Sorry about that. I have not had a chance to update it. The settings and stuff are the same. They just added a bunch of junk that confuses the layout of the first few pages. Do you really need a video on every page? I will get them updated as soon as I can. Sorry for the trouble.

No problem guys. I think I got it taken care of. I don't know if it was causing it, but my "custom domain name" on my smugmug was still set up even though the same address directs people to my flash site.
I deleted the address in the space and now the galleries are accessable.
My GoDaddy is set up for my flash website too so we're all good so far.:nod
edit: Hey Doc, your ellistonfd.smugmug.com link directs me to the same error in my first post above...

I have both a pro account and a standard account, both of which have/had the issue with the domain setting.
I went into my pro account control panel and removed the declared domain, which worked beautifully. I tried to do the same thing in my standard account with no luck because I don't see the place to delete it like I can in my pro account control panel.
A little over a year ago I changed Nicknames, but I don't know if that's causing any issues.
Current Account URL: www.thehilgendorfs.smugmug.com (http://www.thehilgendorfs.smugmug.com)
Old Account URL: www.newleafphotography.smugmug.com (http://www.newleafphotography.smugmug.com)
Old Redirect Setting: www.newleafphotography.com (http://www.newleafphotography.com)
Any ideas?

If your domain is being used ...:ear Great refresher, Andy, as I'm getting ready to switch SM over to a subdomain in GoDaddy soon to allow addition of blog, storefront, etc.... more site flexibility. Thanks.
I am not using Smugmug to host my website, I AM however, pointing to different galleries at Smugmug using a redirect and now nothing works and my clients can't get into my galleries and neither can I. I cannot figure out what to fix. Please help
For example:
www.cwnphotography.com/LT
redirects to:
http://cwnphotography.smugmug.com/LT
which works fine, but when folks try to click on the gallery there they get taken to an error page.
Please help in English :huh

Hello,
is it possible that the user can later see not only the domain name at the beginning? If I select a gallery then my domain name changes to smugmug/gallery/... - ?
Second I want to please to change your data security. If somebody is searching for a member and there is a hit everybody can see how many galleries and photo the user has. I do not want that somebody knows how many photos and galleries I have and so I want to please to change this. I think this is a private information, thank you.

Hello,
I would be very happy for a solution refering your data security. It has no sense to make unlisted galleries if anybody can use the search-function and then sees all the user datas i.e. how many galleries including the unlisted and the number of photos.

I'm glad I came across this sticky, I still had the old CNAME pointing www.smugmug.com. However, in trying to get the Facebook integration to work, I tried going from my URL, prints.baah.net, to the baah.smugmug.com. I can navigate all the way to a gallery listing, but selecting a gallery does a redirect to the prints.baah.net/NN/galleryID.
Anywhere I can figure out why this is happening?

The redirect is normal and how we are doing things now. Customers wanted to use their custom domain more than the yournickname.smugmug.com
This has the advantage of boosting you google ranking etc for the custom domain.
The downside is that Facebook does not like custom domains when connecting like that. We are working to get it fixed.
If you have trouble with the custom domain not working in general, please let me know. I will be happy to help get it fixed. :thumb

grazierphoto.com/proofing

The domain is probably forwarded. You can tell because it switches to yournickname.smugmug.com instead of staying with the custom domain. You need to turn off forwarding and set the CNAME and A records as mentioned earlier.
Email the help desk with your domain host login information if you would like me to do it for you.

I'm in a similar position and would like to use a subdomain as my custom domain name - eg. KrughPhoto.com is hosted elsewhere and contains the main page w/blog, portfolio in flash, etc and I'd like the subdomain proofs.krughphoto.com to go to my smug site with the same address 'proofs.krughphoto.com' instead of the krughphoto.smugmug.com...
Current issue is my domain is with Joker from when I originally setup my smug acct and I'm hosted at (mt) Media Temple. So, I need to use Media Temple's nameservers and that limits what I can do on the Joker end.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
Allen
docwalker
Nov-05-2009, 04:20 PM
Allen, Because you have the nameservers at Media Temple, that is where the change must be done. What you need at Media Temple is a CNAME of proofs pointed at domains.smugmug.com
That is all you need from them and should be pretty easy for them to setup in the DNS if you cannot do it.
Once that is done, you just add your proofs.krughphoto.com to the custom hostname box in your control panel.
That completes the connection.

Hi..
I have contacted Smugmug help staff regarding this yet am unable to get any satisfactory solution other then "tough that's just the way it works"
So I will try here...
I bought a domain name xpirex.com (http://www.dgrin.com/xpirex.com) which now resolves nicely to my Smugmug main homepage. Fine.
I just noticed by sheer accident that xpirex.com and any random rubbish after it that it will STILL resolve to my smug homepage. For example:
xpirex.com\ I WANT TO CUT HIS HEAD OFF
or Xpirex.com\IS A SILLY ASS pasted into a browser will get you there too.
they will ALL resolve to my homepage!!
I paid for and registered only xpirex.com. I only want xpirex.com. I only want xpirex.com to resolve to my Smugmug homepage and nothing else..
I noticed in my stats that some people have navigated to my homepage with:
xpirex.com\destroy today.
I contacted Smug support an was told that it was just a random trying error.. Hmmm.. my stats tell me that this random typing error occurred in 2 places in America several states apart... also in Germany and in Bankok in a 3 hour period. How is it that 3 continents 1000's of miles apart that speak 3 entirely different languages are all making the same URL typing error in ENGLISH? and all coincidently typing the word destroy perfectly and adding it to my domain name? Sorry but this is unacceptable.
As I said previously, I paid for and only bought xpirex.com and nothing else..
I don't want or need Smugmug to kindly send anyone that types anything they like after my domain name including the most offensive things imaginable directly to my site. The possibilities for malicious exploitation with this are endless and very worrying indeed I'm sure anyone will will agree.
I would like a "page not found" link applied to my domain name linked to my SMUGMUG account please for anything that is NOT xpirex.com or xpirex.com\ and a specific album name that I have in the contents of my homepage as other professional hosting sites have.
This is very worrying to me indeed and I request that this please be resolved as soon as possible.
Thank you:dunnoAs I said in your other thread on this topic, you could create a custom script to give you the behavior you desire.
For Smugmug to change their current behavior would break a lot of people's customizations who use this capability to their own beneift (creating custom shortcuts and showing something meaningful on typing errors, separate gallery listing page, find page, etc...). It would probably be better for you to customize your site as you desire.

You do not want to use DNS settings for the extra domains. Only setup the primary domain with the DNS settings. All others are then forwarded (without masking) to the primary domain. They will NOT stay in the browser address bar. Only the primary will.

For anyone else reading this. These steps are for forwarding new multiple domains to an existing correctly setup domain only. Do not do this if you are trying to setup a new domain and point it at a SmugMug site for the first time. It will not work.
Go to the new domain and use the advanced setup option. There you will find on the left hand side the forwarding option.

Understood. But if you know what you're doing, you could implement multiple domain-specific views into your account. No?
docwalker
Jan-28-2010, 11:22 AM
If you are talking about pointing at specific pages on your SmugMug site with each domain, it could be done. But the custom domain for each would not stay in the address bar. It would revert to the primary domain.
The key is that we only support one domain per account. That domain is the one that must appear in the address bar. If you override it, it causes all kinds of problems and we cannot support it.

I was able to check your domain and it looks as if you have done your setup correctly. Now a little patience is required to wait for the DNS servers to update. This can sometime take up to 72 hours to complete. Try entering your domain www.liveshowphotos.com, in a couple of hours or so. If you continue to experience trouble, email us at the Smugmug help desk and we'll be able to have a look for you.

Doc,
I followed your screen shots and my attempt to get a shortened version of my site name to forward is still not working. Am I just not being patient enough? And if that is the case, is it still about 72 hours for some DNS to update?
www.rtsingletonphotography.com is original domain and www.rtsingleton.com is the one am i trying to get godaddy to forward

Do not use forwarding. Always use the CNAME and A record setup.
Contact us on the help desk if you are stuck. Nick, Tyree, or I will get you setup.

Hello All,
I need some help please. I followed the CNAME guide as best as I could, but something is wrong.
My domain is -
www.fotoworx.me (http://www.fotoworx.me) and this now does not load :)
fotoworx.me loads, but not if www. is in front.
What have I messed up?
Thanks

Feb-28-2010, 04:32 AM
Hi,
if the www version is not working it means that the www CNAME is not set up correctly to point at domains.smugmug.com
That needs to be fixed. Contact us on the help desk with your domain host login information. We can usually fix it for you.

See the first post in this thread, it's because your CNAME isn't set up properly. We tried to notify you last year, you must've missed our emails. No worries, the fix is easy. You (or us) change the CNAME to point to domains.smugmug.com and it'll be fixed :)

Just so I don't think I'm completely crazy, did you guys change something on your end that made this change necessary? I'm not complaining but I've been using Total DNS control for the 3 years I've had a custom domain with Smugmug and I only found this thread after I tried to get to my URL today and it didn't work anymore (although it worked two weeks ago).
When you note that the instructions are for domains that are "...improperly configured..." I assume you must also mean that it's also for domains that were configured in the manner you previously instructed. I had my @ record pointing to a different IP and the CNAME www going to www.smugmug.com.

Thanks for the domain purchase! :) I'll be happy to help you out...
It looks like you've entered some wrong info in the custom DNS screen. Now, I'd be happy to just "do it for you", or I can tell you HOW to do it...
First, how to do it.. SmugMug has a great tutorial here: http://wiki.smugmug.net/display/SmugMug/GoDaddy+CNAME+Setup
But, you did the following things wrong:
1) In the CNAME section, it should say "domains.smugmug.com" in the points to area.. NOT your nickname, etc.. Literally, you'll type "domains.smugmug.com" (without the quotes).
2) Change the A record IP address from the current 68.178.232.99 to 208.79.45.23
You'll need to wait about 10 minutes, then go to SmugMug and try the domain again. Make sure you type your domain WITH the www into the SmugMug control panel to improve your site's speed.
If you've already tried, just send me an email with your WolfSnapDomains.com username and password AND your SmugMug username/password. I'll get it done for you quickly.
Thanks!
David
p.s. I actually gave Melanie a call as well, and she's all sorted out now. :)

2. also add or change an A record to 208.79.45.23 if you want people to be able to
access your site without www.
A better way to handle users not entering a "www.", which helps avoid search engine dilution of your content, is the following:
In your domain host configuration, create a subdomain named "www", and CNAME it to domains.smugmug.com (or presumably with this topic you already have that configured).
Configure your top-level domain to REDIRECT to "http://www.[yourdomain]/".
This way, you don't have to enter a static IP address, and users (and search engines) always get to your www subdomain no matter which form they enter.

Jim, That will work for some domain hosts but not all. Sadly no method works for every domain host as they all do things differently. Most of the ones I have dealt with don't allow what you describe. Or its very complicated to setup. I wish that they did make it easier.

Ah, well glad you cleared it up! Hopefully that didn't lead too many people down a rabbit hole. I did know that wasn't part of DNS, my domain host offers it (mydomain.com). Thanks! -Jim

1- How come we don't have this in the pop-up news on our homepage?

1. This was announced several times over the last 2 years here on Dgrin, and via email. The popup news was released last night.
2. The IP address change was mentioned in the dgrin posts and emails at the same time as the CNAME change.
3. The 63.81.134.23 is our old IP address. It is in your @ A record and needs to be changed to 208.79.45.23

Andy, I saw this thread before. It says "is your domain busted?" No, it wasn't. With Smugmug, I never know if it's a major change or just a minor annoucement. For exemple, when I received my first email for a sale, I thought it was an ad for porn and it nearly went in the spam folder.

We emailed all custom domain users over a year ago, at least twice. And we posted on homepage news box and here on Dgrin. We're catching the remaining few stragglers now, after all this time.

They all seem to want me to pay for hosting as well so I can have/use the cname........
Is there anything really really basic that can instruct me??
cheers
Jan
Try godaddy.com and get your .au name there. CNAME setup is dead-simple we can help http://smugmug.com/help/professional-accounts or just write our Support Heroes (http://www.smugmug.com/help/emailreal) we'll be happy to assist :D

Well there is the glitch..........Godaddy don't have .com.au.......the Australian bit is the kicker....
Not sure where to go with this as the Au domain sellers are not very helpful.

I've got a small trouble here...
Setup:
mydomain.com -> In A -> My provider IP (then via HTTP 301 redirect to www)
www.mydomain.com -> CNAME -> domains.smugmug.com
- that works fine, but setup:
www.mydomain.com -> IN A -> my provider IP (then via HTTP 301 redirect to mydomain com without www)
mydomain.com -> CNAME -> domains.smugmug.com
doesn't work.
I tried everything but in this second case NSlookup says: No answer when I try to ask about mydomain.com.
I can't set both A and CNAME address pointing to domains.smugmug.com, cause it's a mistake and it's prohibited by RFC.
I'm using DirectAdmin panel to configure my DNS.
Any ideas how to bring to work mydomain.com without www? Can I specify only A field pointing to IP of domains.smugmug.com?

I would remove the a record and simply use two c names to domains.smugmug.com.

Hmmm, great idea but when I try to do this I have:
"No answer"
response from DNS server when I telnet to it and ask about mydomain.com.
Smugmug also says, that: "That hostname doesn't appear to be valid. Your hostname needs to be setup using a CNAME record at your domain registrar. See our help section on custom hostnames."...

Oh, that's right, you can only have a 1:1 relation with the domains.smugmug.com.
Have you thought of having a cname entry from the www domain to the non-www one? I don't know if this is possible or legal (I just closed my networksolutions dns panel), but I'm just thinking out loud.

Hi Shantyman,
An A record must point to an IP address (not to a hostname). If you want your domain to work both with and without the www part, try this:
1) set up the www CNAME record, pointed at domains.smugmug.com (it sounds like you may already have done this)
2) set up an @ (or empty) A record, pointed at 208.79.45.23.
The @ A record will get your domain name to work without the www part (this will redirect that version of your domain to the www version).
If you like, just write us at help@smugmug.com, and let us know the domain name in question, and we can double check your domain settings for you. We can even login with your domain host if you give us your login credentials, and we can set this up for you if you wish. :D

The problem is that I want to do primarily powidoki.com (without www) to work, then to insert HTTP 301 on www.powidoki.com to my provider's apache, that will point to powidoki.com (domains.smugmug.com).
But as I'm doing it - powidoki.com. CNAME domains.smugmug.com. (dots at the end are needed I think) and:
www IN A my_provider_IP
I've got error from DNS server, that says: No Answer.
It looks that I must have IP (A record) pointed to my provider and www CNAMEd to sth else...
rnrjosh, I'll try to do as you said. ;-)

Shantyman,
I am afraid that what you want to do will not work. the CNAME record is the one that MUST be the primary on your SmugMug site. Given the way the RFQ's are written for domains, the www record is the one that will be the CNAMEd record. The root domain powidoki.com is almost always setup using the A record.
Folks can use powidoki.com to access your site if the A record and www CNAME are setup correctly. But the www.powidoki.com is the one that will show in the URL.

Guys, you are fantastic and so helpful! THANK YOU!!!
@rnrjosh, it's incredible and so great to have in mind that there is a service like Smugmug with people who want help! Thank you ;)
And big thanks to @docwalker - it looks like you're right about CNAME. My admin (UNIX lover and hacker ;) told me almost all about CNAMES and he gived me quotation from RFC:
http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc1912
2.4 CNAME records
A CNAME record is not allowed to coexist with any other data. In
other words, if suzy.podunk.xx is an alias for sue.podunk.xx, you
can't also have an MX record for suzy.podunk.edu, or an A record, or
even a TXT record. Especially do not try to combine CNAMEs and NS
records like this!:
podunk.xx. IN NS ns1
IN NS ns2
IN CNAME mary
mary IN A 1.2.3.4
This is often attempted by inexperienced administrators as an obvious
way to allow your domain name to also be a host. However, DNS
servers like BIND will see the CNAME and refuse to add any other
resources for that name. Since no other records are allowed to
coexist with a CNAME, the NS entries are ignored. Therefore all the
hosts in the podunk.xx domain are ignored as well!
If you want to have your domain also be a host, do the following:
podunk.xx. IN NS ns1
IN NS ns2
IN A 1.2.3.4
mary IN A 1.2.3.4
Don't go overboard with CNAMEs. Use them when renaming hosts, but
plan to get rid of them (and inform your users). However CNAMEs are
useful (and encouraged) for generalized names for servers -- `ftp'
for your ftp server, `www' for your Web server, `gopher' for your
Gopher server, `news' for your Usenet news server, etc.
Don't forget to delete the CNAMEs associated with a host if you
delete the host it is an alias for. Such "stale CNAMEs" are a waste
of resources.
So the answer is: I can have only www.powidoki.com and powidoki.com redirected to www by HTTP 301 redirect ;)
Thank you and best regards
Kaspar

In a nutshell, to set up the CNAME correctly you need the following:
1. for the www host point a CNAME record to domains.smugmug.com
2. also add or change an A record to 208.79.45.23 if you want people to be able to
access your site without www. domains.smugmug.com and don't
add an A record as it isn't needed.
Please write the correct settings, that the site was accessible only to the following address - http://mysite.com/ (without www), and was not accessible to the following address http://www.mysite.com/ (with www):
A Records -
CNAME Records -
Thanks.

Short Answer: Those are the correct settings. The CNAME is required for your domain to work with SmugMug. You are not required to use the @ A record if you do not want to. That is up to you.
Details:
The problem is that the domain RFC rules (see below) do not allow for an @ CNAME so you cannot setup example.com
99% of the domain hosts follow the rules and require you to use the @ A record and an IP address to set up the domain with nothing in the subdomain, ie. the root of the domain.
SmugMug is spending millions of dollars to deliver your photos and videos as quickly as possible. The CDN setup requires us to use a CNAME as the IP addresses are changing all the time.
Using the instructions above visitors can enter example.com or www.example.com in order to access the site. You can use example.com in your links, business card, etc. SmugMug will automatically switch to the CNAMEd www version. The domain must use the CNAME as the primary and that is what is displayed after the site opens in the browser.
If you do not want want the www at all, you would need to find a domain host that allows you to use a CNAME on the example.com version of your domain. I have only found 2 domain hosts out of the (literally) hundreds that I have dealt with that allow it. No, I do not know their names at this time and I will not recommend them as I am pretty sure that they are breaking the rules or doing something weird to allow it.
From my research, this is the applicable RFC:
From RFC1034 section 3.6.2:
If a CNAME RR is present at a node, no other data should be present; this ensures that the data for a canonical name and its aliases cannot be different.

Does that help?Andy, I have to agree with cman here. There's a lot of stuff on that page and no explicit instructions that say what exactly to really do. Instead, you're left to read a whole bunch of words and try to understand what it says. This page could use 1000 less words and two specific examples of exactly what to do like your previous post here. This page could be a LOT better than it is.

I am using a sub-domain and I am NOT using GoDaddy. I am using 1and1. When I go to the homepage of my photos (http://sire.smugmug.com), all is good. But when I click on any folder and the link directs to my subdomain, I have broken photo links.
I went into the control panel on my server and under DNS settings, the A-record shows: 208-79-45-23.
So WHAT am I doing wrong???

When I try to create an A record with @ for the hostname, it says Invalid Hostname.

I attempted to post a new topic about this, but it didn't show up. Probably best to post this here anyhow. I have set up my domain through GoDaddy per the instructions, but still my old site is displaying (www.stevengrayphoto.com). More frustrating is the fact that I can no longer access my SM account because logging in through stevengrayphoto.smugmug.com now redirects to www.stevengrayphoto.com, which is displaying my old site.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What I am seeing now is this. On one computer I was just able to get to the correct site in Firefox if I enter www.stevengrayphoto.com but just entering stevengrayphoto.com lands me back at the old site. Any other browser sends me to the old site regardless. On every other computer I try I get the old site with or without the www. I have cleared browser cache on all machines. The link you provided lands me at a HostGator 404 - Not Found page (they hosted my site prior to making the change).
To clarify, if you land at a page with a panoramic image of a stream, that is my old WordPress based site. And, as a slight update, I can now no longer access the SM page at all again on any machine, in any browser.
Also, I apologize for the double post. My new thread didn't show up right away. I've done forum support in the past and I know how annoying dual posts are! Please feel free to delete the other thread.
