I use The GIMP sometimes for photo-editor, open source program. I don't do a lot of post-processing on any program as a rule, but use some functions of a few on occasion.

The Gimp has a feature called "Sample Colorize". You take an example of a color tone you like, or any photo that has a predominant color scheme, or perhaps tone of its own, and it is "sampled" by the program, and put on another photo. I suppose any would work but I've used it on B&W.
Interesting and subtle results:

I think Photoshop may have similar function, but I don't know what it is called or where. Anyway, the above are a few examples.

http://www.gimpguru.org/Tutorials/SampleToning/ talks about this at length, and has quite a few ready made files to use for "sample colorize." I like the silver and platinum ones, myself.

Yes, I saw that a long time ago and then began to occasionally experiment.

OH boy, a whole new area in which to experiment. Found this site Photoshop for Photographers (http://epaperpress.com/psphoto/) - looks like a good starting point for PS users.

Yes, PS must have something similar. Trick is choosing well what the "sample" will be from I found. I used some of Steichen - he was the master of toning techniques, some of his famous ones, like "FlatIron Building 1908" having many different toned prints.
