Northern Flicker...

One of the more common woodpeckers around my area. Shot by luck in an out of the way small, but interesting couty park - Cranberry Lake Preserve in Harrison, NY. Not perfect, since it is not razor sharp and you can only barely see the red spot on the back of his head.

Good capture Keith. Those smaller birds are so much harder to shoot than the big ones I shoot. :thumb

I love that bird, Keith. I would not have known it is not sharp. I read that contrast can fool one into thinking it is sharp.


I worked on my larger bird shots all day yesterday. I can honestly say, I have had no luck in fooling anyone with contrast.............mine, sometimes the sharp ones don't look as good as yours. Then I try to up the contrast, which either seems to be there, or it doesn't.

Woodpeckers are special to me. Have not seen that many, the ones I have seen, I have not photographed. Did see one this yr, failed on the photography end, don't remember why.

Have I mentioned that I am living in Monsoon season: Southeast USA. Dogs got a slight drizzle to go out in this AM, that was the best weather since Sunday. Otherwise I would go on a bird walk tomorrow, try to get some little ones.
