As i mentioned in another thread i was going to see some bands & phoned ahead & got permission to shoot the whole show.

Man what a night ! I had totally forgotten just how loud these guys play. I got smashed a few times when i got to close to the front of the stage so i hung at the side & behind most of the time.

So i took my anti-inflammatories for my back...put some ear plugs in...& finally realised that im over 40.

Its a bit of a long post...im in broardband with-drawals so you will just have to put up with a longish photo post.

I think your white balance is off......:dunno

:hide :rofl :rofl :rofl

Seriously man, some very fine work there :thumb I like the way you mixed it up between the black and white and the color shots, and also between the straight portraits and the abstracts. Shows you have a great eye for composition and for bringing the feel of the moment to the image.

I like 'em a lot, but especially the first one of the drummer in motion, that's my personal favorite.

Take care and congrats on a successful night out,

Mongrel

Ta mate...i ended up with about 150 keepers that the recording manager & promoter want to see. Really odd...they treated me with a lot of respect, i actually expected some trouble but could not have been further from it. A terrific bunch of people.

I'm glad these pictures don't contain that 130 dB of noise. Nevertheless, they scream - which is a good thing.

That first one, the drummer, is at the top of my list as the coolest shot. That drummer doesn't look human, but lots of these dudes don't look human - which, also, might be a good thing for the mood and style of these pics.

You did good here, and it sounds like you had a blast, literally. Now, go sell those pictures!

Thanks guys...im still overwhelmed at just how well recieved i was. Looks like no one with a camera has ever shown an interest in these bands.

Hmm... fees ? well i was given free entry & as many cokes as i could drink ($20 worth so thats the most i have ever made with a camera to date). I will just play it by ear & see if they ask me to do more as to be honest that is the 1st time i have ever done it & didnt really think i would get much.

They are right into updating their web sites etc & can hardly do that themselves. I just enjoyed the night out & the enthusiasm they showed.

Thanks for looking guys

Very cool series. My son was in a punk band at one time. You really captured the flavor of being at the show. Just a great mix of image types that fit together and tell a story.

Thanks for looking gary/nir/monster. Im just burning 200 shots now & going to get them of to the record (do we still call them that ?) bloke tomorrow.

I cant believe no-one is shooting these guys. Suppose it isnt everyones cup of tea in that level of noise & action. One band of young fellas asked me to do a small shoot for them under the building & i said only if you take a lecture from an old fart (tinitus sufferer) about wearing earplugs...they took it well.

I went to see George T/Good a few years back & these guys blew him out of the water volume wise hands down.

Here they are...black as a bats arse under the building so they did well to stay still for me to shoot them at f3.5 10mm.

Really nice kids.

Congratulations 'Gus. Albumn cover credits coming your way. That ought to thelp pay for your 20D!!

Save the ear plugs for yourself. The kids won't have anything to do with them, in spite of Pete Townsend and how many other deaf musicians. :D

Mate i hate charging money...i know i have to.. but doing what i do is the only thing that separates photography from work. Its hard to explain but i need experience & by getting my name about with the local bands it could get me a portfolio good enough to approach the big boys for large concerts which i would have no qualms charging for shots....but the day out is the real thrill for me.

I never started doing this for money & dont want it to become something that is expected of me as i can pick-up & put down the camera whenever i want :uhoh ...honestly.

What the hell would you charge a cab driver...a carpenter & a fuel pump attendant to shoot thier album cover ? Does it go by the number of copies released ?:dunno

Gus, I don't want to shoot as a pro either. I have a day job and have to keep my clients satisfied. That is the nice thing about photography for me - I do not have to satisfy anyone but myself. As soon as you start being paid, then you will have expectations placed on you.
SO do whatever floats your boat.

:thumbIm with you on this one mate. Its not as if im stepping on any pro's toes. These guys in particular are also promoters for a lot of local bands & have already put my name on 'photography pass' at the venues so i can come & go as i please.

I need these guys to get me into the big events as they are a pretty close knit community & talk amongst themselves.

This is what (http://www.bigdayout.com/lineup/artists.php) i want to eventually get to shoot. Its another local festival about 40 mins from here. 50 000 fans there last year.

very vibrant shots Humungus. You know by looking at them that it must be loud, smoky and not for oldies above 40... (I am in that place myself)
What is most interesting here is that you got most of the movement. I especially like the first shot (drummer?) and the guy with the yellow hair (it has a name but I don't know it).
Great series

if you only buy lenses that cost less than $100, it will pay for lenses. i highly doubt they'll pay you well, but i could be wrong. usually i work for free or for some of the bands merch, then they'll order prints (which can pay well when they buy larger prints) and i get a lot of publicity. i guess if you shoot for an event with a bunch of bands you could possibly make some money.

Excellent series--photos 1 and 6 are my favorites. Lilke the graniness and black in white of the first. Like the slow shutter speed in the 6th which gives in a blend of rhythm and beat.

Ta auraflora. I shot another 6 bands the night before last & im in a spot of bother with my hearing. I wont be back until/unless i can get some better protection. Safest place for a photographer shooting punk bands (you ever seen them dance ?) is beside the speakers unfortunately which thus.. is the problem.
