Fog rolls in from the ocean an hour ago, hiding most of the community of Pouch Cove, Newfoundland under a cooling blanket as the sun sets behind the hills.

I live in a vally and we get dense fog often, but it happens only when it is dark so I seldom get the chance to capture it.

WIth your photo if it was me I would crop most of the "white sky" out giving it a more panoramic effect and bringing the focus to the fog. The white is a bit overwhelming.

I did try your suggestion, but to me, cropping most of the sky didn't seem to improve the focus on the fog and it threw off my compositional balance.

Thanks again for the suggestion, though.

I think it's really the light that makes this shot, too. Glad you like it.

Eastern Newfoundland has it's moments. That same fog that looks ethereal and cooling can be tedious when it socks in for days and even weeks at a time sometimes. But, you're right, we do have a rugged beauty here and we seldom have to suffer through unbearable heat or any extremes, and have almost no natural disasters, like hurricaines, floods, earthquakes, etc. Heck, we don't even have a snake to worry about here :wink

Thanks again for the suggestion, though.Maybe you're right... here's a version with the sky cropped much closer to the mountains. Does anyone else have an opinion as to whether this version pulls the eye more strongly to the fog? Is it an OK composition too?

I like the cropped version much better. I think it draws attention to the fog better than the 1st. A graduated ND filter might have helped with the sky.

You wouldn't believe the scrambling I had to do to get this shot - trying to avoid the forest of utility poles and the web of cabling along the main road, where the best view was of the fog-filled valley. Then trying to get the shot before the sun was gone and before the fog filled the entire area. This was practically the only view available in the entire town that was worth taking.

and for the suggestion of the filter. So far I haven't used filters at all - although the adaptor for my tele extension lens is 58mm and can be used for filters. In this instance, it just might have at least put some color in the sky, I guess and maybe even brought out more detail around the sun.

Thanks again, Rich.
