I am thinking of buying the Nikon 18-200. In the same ballpark are some Sigma's that are 2.8's. I am asking you, the powers that be, what would you recommend in the sub $1000. range?:bow

2.8 lenses = lots of money

Sounds like a great lens for crop sensor bodies.

Sigma 18-250.....there is a wonderful comparison of the Nikon 18-200vr vs Sigma 18-250os over at Nikon Cafe (http://www.nikoncafe.com/vforums/showthread.php?t=237119&highlight=18-200+sigma+18-250), and the results are dang near identical and the comparator said he was keeping the Sigma .............

I do not think that any 18-200mm from any brand get into the 2.8 range.
I have the nikon copy which is a good lens for all around shooting. Depends on what you are shooting and what you want your end results to be.
I have bought a Tokina 50-135mm f2.8 which is a nice lens for 550.00 but there is no VR or OS. But it is slightly sharper.
