hmmm any pricing on those yet? I can't really figure out where the 3000 fits in? Above the d60 but below the d90?

I think the D3000 will replace the D60. $599 with kit lens.

D300S is $1799.

If I understand the current Nikon lineup, it will be (from least to most):

D3000 (replaces/upgrades D40)
D5000 (replaces/upgrades D60)
D90
D300S (replaces D300)
D700
D3
D3X

The Nikon USA site still shows the D300, D60 and D40 in the current lineup but I bet when inventory dries up they will disappear. I suspect a new model will come out even simpler than the D3000, maybe before Christmas this year. In other words I don't believe that Nikon is simply replacing cameras 1:1. It will probably be 3 cameras to replace the D40 and D60, expanding the entry level Nikon market.

In terms of a numeric pattern (three digits, first digit is odd), D100 would make sense, but I doubt they would repeat a model number (maybe D100S or D110). Similarly, if there is a new low-end, it might be called D1000.

Since the top-end is single digits, it kind of makes sense to make the bottom-end into four digits to make the whole line-up move in a consistent direction. I wonder if the opening left at D500 was intentional.

D9000? Seems like it will be in the Dx000 range, and that they are cutting out the Dx0 range, probably because they've used up most of the numbers!

Glad to see that they have made a move forward. Quiet shutter and dual card slot is nice. Every one is going to the movies too. My D50 is showing a hot pixel in the sensor. Might have to get a D300s to replace it and then the old D300 becomes back up.
