what metering mode should I use on a canon with ringflash, what do you use?

i dont think it really matters, you adjust fec to alter the flash output acording to subject/background lightness.

AFAIK metering with flash defaults to evaluative with canon cameras when flash is used. As Phil suggests you need to get used to using FEC (+ve FEC for light backgrounds and -ve FEC for dark or no background). I tend to range from -1 FEC to +2 FEC.
