Delay in displaying selected photo?

On certain galleries that haven't been accessed in quite a while, I am noticing a 15-45 second delay from the time I select a thumbnail until photo is actually displayed in selected photo box. Window stays blank while browser status window says "transferring data from..." during wait period. Using Smugmug style. Why the delay?

I run across this constantly even on fresh galleries. Sometimes it just seems to "hang" on a particular picture. If I refresh the entire page, it usually will load then. Really annoying when it happens about every 100 photos and you're reviewing a batch of 900.

I've resolved in my mind that it must be a browser issue as it leaks memory after so many images open/close operations. I've seen this operation on IE and FF and almost every version all the way to almost the first day that SM started using the javascript menu buttons.
