Is there any way I can keep the custom look of this gallery:

but retain the black background colour which I get when switching appearance from 'Custom' to 'Smugmug', as in this gallery:

I tried changing the theme, but to get the theme to show I have to change appearance from custom to smugmug and that changes my footer. Is there a way to keep the customization and just change the background colour on the gallery page?

Is there a way to keep the customization and just change the background colour on the gallery page? You can change the theme on just the gallery (there's a theme's button in the gallery) and still have the gallery set to "custom". I don't understand why there would a be a difficulty with that.

If you just change the background color to black, the you will also have to change all black text everywhere in the page to other colors that will be visible. That can be done, it's just a bunch of work to make sure you got all text everywhere it can appear in all the different views. It's akin to making a new theme which is why I suggested starting with a theme that has the right general text and background colors.

It could also be that your own customization is interfering with the settings in an appropriate theme and you need to change your own customization (which contains global settings) so it doesn't smash what the themes are trying to do. When you set the gallery the "smugmug", you are telling it to strip your customization from that gallery so maybe that's what you are seeing.

I think you are correct when you say my own customization may be interfering...that's the problem when the customization has happened in piece meal over some time.

I've tried the gallery specific and site wide theme changes to try and achieve what I wanted...to no avail. I'm close with where it is now, and would actually be happy if I could override the smug footer on the gallery page and have it show with my custom footer with the mini smug footer underneath. Don't know if that is possible :dunno

That means all your control over the page (including headers/footers) disappears. If you want to have any control over the page (other than picking a theme), you HAVE to use "Custom". If that isn't what you want, then you will have to add a combination of theme and customizations to get it to what you want.

OK, thanks John.
