challenge 13: pathways

dgrin challenge 13 begins today, may 20th and runs thru monday, may 31st at 10pm NYC time. the theme is pathways, so let your imagination and creativity go wild. post all entries as replies to this thread.

*** remember kids, please delete everything in the reply except what you are adding ***

here are the rules:

1. contests will start on thursdays, and run for eleven days, ending on a monday night. the purpose of this is so that you folks will have two weekends in which to creat your prize winning photographs.

2. at the end of the contest period, i (or my designee if i'm not available) will choose the finalists which will be voted on by the dgrin populace. the voting thread will be started as soon as possible after the close of the contest period, and will be open for voting for approximately 48 hours,. Also, during each vote for winner, participants will vote for the theme for the next contest. any member of dgrin is eligible to vote, whether they entered in the challenge or not.

3. all participants will be encouraged to post suggestions for themes for the contests. we'll do this in a separate thread, and i'll keep a constantly fresh bucket of topics for everyone to vote from every two weeks.

that thread is right here (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=1309)

4. we now have prizes for the winner!

* a $25 gift certificate for anything from the smugmug print catalog...this should be used to order something made of the prize winning pic.

or

* a free, one-year standard subscription to smugmug if you are *not* already a subscriber

how about that!

5. i will be benevolent host for the contests, and i will not be eligible to enter.

6. *** you are limited to three entries. you may swap entries at anytime up until the close of the contest. three entries.

7. other rules remain the same:

* let your creativity and imagination run wild. any and all photoshop etc :ps is allowed
* photos must be fresh, shot during the contest period. (exif available)
* photos must be 800 pixels on their longest side, and not more than 150K in size
* you must give a unique name to your photo, so everyone can vote on it
* you may submit your photo to any of the other forums on dgrin for critique and comment prior to entering in the contest.

:deal that's it for the rules! :clap

enjoy (challenge) photography,

Do people ever question what you're up to when they see you photographing them. I've not really done any candid stuff yet, but I've been so impressed by the way your people tell a story that I feel I should make start.

Thanks Gubbs. In China, everyone minds their business. One guy said something to me one day a while ago and I wasn't even taking his picture! Most of the time, because of where I live (in rural Pudong), the people are so stoked to see a foreigner that they wave and smile after I take the photo. It also helps that I use the 828 most of the time because I can act as if I'm reviewing pictures when I'm really snapping them; the swivel body gives me a degree of stealth. People are definitely my favorite subject because they're so interesting just doing their daily activities. I'm glad that you want to get into it. I think you'll find it very rewarding.

Also if you notice, a lot of my people shots are from behind!! Start with that perspective and gain some confidence...

That sucks, Sorry to hear about it, backs are especially debilitating. No fun at all. Three guys on my floor at work are on crutches - two of them over 40 and paying for an active lifestyle. No carwrecks, just basic activity that their bodies can't handle anymore.

Little feels worse than Muscle Pain,:sick at least IF that is the kind of pain you are feeling at any given moment. We are well acquainted with back spasms, here... and they really are "a real pain in the back." Oops, sorry...

Awesome shotThanks for all the kind words. http://www.dgrin.com/images/icons/lickout.gif I almost did not post this because I was not sure if it was a pathway, but it is of sorts.

I went out West for a vacation, not just for this contest, Ginger. http://www.dgrin.com/images/icons/Laughing.gif

I don't think I cropped it very much at all - I will have to look at the file at home this evening to be sure. Neil
Neil:
What size are you "shooting" the image? (I use Fine)
What format?
What program are you using to "work" the image?
Are you on dial-up or broadband (Here size & time might be factors for dial up, like I have at the moment...)

I can help you with Photoshop based programs, but am not up to snuff on some of the others.
That being said... If the image is Jpeg, I recommend saving it in your programs format, doing all of the adjustments as needed.
Size the image, I generally use 8"x6" as a base point at 100dpi
Save for web, aka optimize for web, (here I always strive to keep it at or above 75%.
Then save.
Export up onto your Smugmug website and link back to it to post.
I'm sure there are several other methods that work... Hope this helps a bit....
If your in Photoshop, I can give you step by step directions.

No hue/color shift changes, just a boost in saturation at the end.

I didn't get the DOF effect as much as I had wanted on my little Canon G2, so I used the Photoshop CS Lens Blur for the first time. Among other things, it seemed to lighten certain areas, particularily the green foliage more than I liked. So I boosted the saturation.

Wa it too much?

The empty path is only empty to those without the gift of imagination.
Those with the gift are able to envision all that might have been on the path before, and all that is yet to come... the possibilities of that path are endless.

Thanx. I'm still quite the beginner with PS, trying to learn by ear,(eye) so to speak. That's a gaussian blurred black and white layer at 60% opacity on top of the original. I liked it as well, but thought I might be the only one. I think I may need to take a full-on, no holds barred, bleed my hobby money dry photoshop course one day... Trying to figure it all out seems a bit like deciphering luxury home blueprints in aramaic. (speaking from experience there...lmao) I hope in a future incarnation to be a descendant of Andy's.

I like the second one, too. The blurred one with the white overlay, or whatever you call it.

I have liked goldish colors on my pictures, I think I will try for some of that white stuff, too.

I liked it when I first saw it earlier today, before my computer completely crashed.

It has a kind of ghostly quality, without looking cutesy, that is what I think.
I thought for a minute or so that the place was actually fogged or the light was funny or whatever. Maybe really haunted, smile.

I thank you, I am going to try playing with white when the gold doesn't work,

Thank you See Moon, I really like your shot, too. I love things like that. And I would have moved the motorcycle and ruined the whole shot, not completely ruined, but certainly not the great shot I think yours is.

And the funny thing is it looks like where I live in South Carolina. Places like that are around here, sitting on land worth a fortune. I am embarrassed photographing them, well, they don't have the motorcycle, nor the path. The people are around, and they stare at me. Often they are kids, elementary school type, and I know they don't want me taking their pictures.

I thought they were going to really yell at me at that cemetery, sitting with an AME Church, and the basket people of this low country. They kept coming over and "reminding" me not to get them in any of the pictures. I didn't plan on it, and I didn't. If I really want one, I will sneak it, but I didn't even want one. This time.
But I was embarrassed, but determined to take those pictures.

(Other than that, I could be living in Malaysia.)

Ginger, Lynn, thanks. Just so you know, if Photoshop layers were paint on a cavas, the paint on the second one would be about an inch thick!

Lynn put me on the path by mentioning duotones. I played with them, after doing the Ansel Adams Channel Mixer. Blue really makes B&W pop.

Lynn... Are you for real? Did you really break your foot? I feel for you if you did. How badly? How long will you be off it? Augghhh. I had major foot surgery a few summers back and the worse part was not the pain, but the inconvenience of having to lug the heavy foot around! Gave new meaning to the term "lead foot."

Sid, I love Uphill. Beautifully executed!

This one is really quite beautiful.
I really like the the shadow and light play against the dirt road as the sunlight filters through the canopy of trees. The perspective effect as the road tips over the crest of the hill, giving the illusion that there is a small green door to somewhere, at the end.
Peaceful and serene.

challenge 13: pathways

dgrin challenge 13 begins today, may 20th and runs thru monday, may 31st at 10pm NYC time. the theme is pathways, so let your imagination and creativity go wild. post all entries as replies to this thread.

Well, I think I shot my last photo for this assignment today.

But once again I got a lesson in how important the details are. This landscape was shot in portrait mode--NOT paying attention! The dial moved and I didn't notice.

Anyway, here it is. Just cropped, adjusted the contrast and sharpened.

It's a fire break here in SoCal. The sunset made it look fiery to me, hence the name:

first one is quite lovely. a person / subject in the shot would make it a winner. the second is very nicely done, though more of a stairway than a path. it got edged out by the finalists.

Andy, thanks for taking the time to comment on all of these. Funny thing is with the first, I had several shots of that scene with my daughter in it, but somehow none of them worked like I had hoped, so I was left with an empty path...

Anyway, thanks again for taking the time.

Well here's a pic from the newbie.......

a nice idea, though it doesn't grab the viewer. still, a good effort :D

Since I have not been playing by the rules I've deleted the other pictures and made some new for this challenge yesterday on my way home:

i liked the ideas for all three images. the first two suffer from central composition of the main subjects in think. the last is very clever.

you were just edged out by the finalists :clap :clap :clap

Pathway of Pain

dramatic - for sure - but the path is so short it doesn't convey path as well as the finalists.

well done though

I have seen some realy great pathways! A special good job to Lynn, on her personal pathway of pain. No prize winner here but what the hay...it's a pathway. The cat told me it was "His Pathway"

look to stick to the rule of 3rds...this pic suffers from central composition, and while a good shot for the fridge or family album...you got edged by the finalists....

Andy,
Going through, and somehow evaluating, and critiquing all of the entries is a very difficult and time consuming undertaking. It says something about who you are as a person, as well as, as a photographer. Critiques from other well established and talented photographers, (as well as our peers) is very important to personal growth in photographic skills. I personally, really consider these critiques to see how they might relate to my work, in the hopes that they might shed some light on how I might be able to better my work. Just wanted to let you know, your efforts were informative and appreciated, and your final critiques, more so.

Andy, when you announced the new challenge rules, I had sort of a bad attitude about it. The Fred Miranda weekly and monthly assignments have very similar rules and formats (except that only one entry per person is allowed.) So what was the differentiation except for less competition?

OK, you have answered that question by writing critiques for (nearly?) all the entries that didn't make the finals. That represents a lot of work and it is appreciated (though I wish I'd made the cut.) Will you be able to keep this up?

thanks rutt - very much - i expect i could keep it up, though to a point. i'm going to enlist the aid of some other folks too, so that as much as possible, everybody gets a response & critique.

by the way - i'm in favor of fewer entries per person... and in the future, as we grow in size of contestants, i'm certain we will pare down the number of entries. but that's not today, or even tomorrow....

thanks for sharing your thoughts, very appreciated.

Andy,

I had no idea you would be writting a critique for every photo submitted! Had I known I never would have submitted the damn cat! :D But now that I know......I'm gona really try to get a "real" entry for the next contest. That way, if I submit something I like, and represents an honest effort, I will be able to benifit from your critique. Thanks!
