Harry i bought a used lens from a guy --not sure if it is any good so please look at the shots and tell me what you think

it does take butt shots:huh :Dand dfif shot hand held at about 75 feet and almost got it --so Harry send the lens back or keep trying :dunno I call him today and he said look rookie try a few setting and shoot again ,this is the shoot again :rofl :rofl

What kind of lens is it? F-stop? What settings were you using in each photo, your distance? Etc...

To my untrained eye they look soft and/or out of focus.

I agree with Dee re info.

I cannot tell on the focus, and if they were out of focus, I wouldn't know if it was the lens. I can't tell if my own shots I work on are out of focus, :rofl

ginger (See I bumped myself over you, so I am bumping you back, but it is late for Harry, maybe you will get him in the AM.)

I would even want to know the kind of lens, maker, focal length, etc.

Hey Jeff,

I've looked at the shots and its clear that you were snookered into buying a cheap and clearly defective lens. :lol

Being a nice guy I contacted the seller and asked for a refund for you. His response was :bad

as for the shots ( it would be easier if we knew the exif data)

not too bad. Chicks are hard to shoot because they are usually soft and fuzzy. They look out of focus even when they are in focus.

A difficult shot because that stilt was moving fast. I would guess that you needed a faster shutter speed for that shot

looks good but might be a tad sharper. what was your aperture setting? The background is nicely blurred on the shot

a classic butt shot. Looks to me like your aperture needed to be stepped down. The fence post is in focus but you lose sharpness as you move to the right in the shot. I think you focused on the butt (sorry but that's your MO) and your aperture was not stepped down enough

is out of focus. How close were you to that poor bug? The minimum focusing distancing on the 300mm/f4 is 4'8".

jeff,

as i am finding out the hard way, there seems to be a bit of a learning curve with the longer glass. its kinda how i imagine shooting a rifle over long distances...any error from your end gets multiplied over the distance to the target. i have learned to try to keep my shutter speed up as high as possible. it may not apply to you as i'm not sure if the new glass has VR or not and i'm pretty sure you are not as shakey as i amhttp://dgrin.com/images/smilies/Twitch_anim.gif

I got the lens from Harry :D and it does take some getting use too. this is only the second time i shot with it --first time was not so good and by the way with no info Harry nailed every shot .his advice on each one is just about perfect and this just go to show you be very careful who you do business with :rofl :rofl good shooting with the new lens Harry and if you need any setting advice you know who not to call :cry :D the dragon fly [i know is very bad] but i shot it hand held,without af and they did not hover . i did not believe it was even anything but a blur . thanks again Harry a few nore trips and i will get the feel for it

Jeff, I have that lens. Other than the less used 70-200L, I basically have two lenses I use all the time. The 300 Prime and the 17-40 L.........

I bought them in February, or there abouts. I also bought the 1.4 extender, and have since purchased the 2 Xs extender. If you think about the 2 Xs, be aware that you do lose your autofocus with both of those extenders on. That means you can shoot a "sitting duck", haha, or baby birds, lots of things, but those birds in flight, unless you are better than I am, you just sit and watch them go by.

I am getting better with them just recently, I have actually only started really practicing on them recently............but with just the 1.4 Xs extender on. I do need the AF.

Actually, mine is a Canon.

The lens shocked the H out of me,at first, with its reach, which I felt I had little control over. It took some amazing shots, in my ignorance, I did get good photos, some better than I am getting now with more knowledge. I liked the bokeh. And the selective focus, though it did the selecting,:rofl , don't tell on that one.

My other fave lens is at the other end of the scale, it is the 17-40L, an easier lens to just put on for the first time and feel control of the lens.

I love them both. I probably use the long one more, it depends on what I am doing. I lug my backpack everywhere, you never know when a NH or a GBH is/are going to come sit next to you.

With the babies larger, and because I want to, I have been using just the 1.4 extender, that does give me AF. I have been using it most of the time the last couple of weeks, so most shots that don't look wide, from me, they probably came from that combo. F4 300 Prime with 1.4 extender on it, making it 420mm. Digital, I do not convert figures, Canon 20D digital, in case you want to.

Ginger i have 2 lens that i use now before i never took the 70/200 off my camera now with the 300 prime [as of friday thanks to Harry] I need to learn how to shoot the lens and adapt to it .Now the 1.4 is the only tc i think i would buy I did use a 1.7 and had ok luck with it, that was a while back and i think now i would do better . but for the sake of sharpness 1.4 and use it on both lens is what i will buy . I want the 200/400 vr :scratch :huh

After much consideration, contemplation, and studying. I have discovered the reason for all your photographic problems and came up with a perfect solution. Sell all that faulty nikon stuff and buy canon. Common man you know you wanna. Give into the peer pressure. Just Do It.I was going to do that but the canon people saw my stuff and did not want a bad rap on their gear so nikon as given me 3 months to improve or they p/u my camera :cry and really you and i both know anyone can take a picture with a canon ,it takes a gifted person to shot a nikon :rofl
