Meet No-Tail

[Dogdots]

I know....Sparrows....not that interesting and may even be boring to look at compared to all the beautiful colored birds out there. No-Tail was born in the birdhouse behind my house. When she finally made her appearance she had one tiny tail feather. It has since grown out. Next door to her is another No-Tailed sparrow. I call that one No-Tail 2. She has no long tail feathers, but just some bushy feathers. No-Tail 1 is quiet and a loner. No-Tail 2 is a fiesty bird. I have since seen a no-tailed male sparrow. I don't know if this is common or not. My friend Jim also a dgrinner has taken a photo of a sparrow with no tail or rudder as I like to call it. I'm hoping someone out there can tell me if this is a common thing or not.

I hope someone knows if the no-tail is common or not.

Nice photo -- no glare off the white of the bird. I have problems with that. Your bird actually flew off the ground....mine was just dragging its feet in the water :D

Looks like a recently fledged house sparrow to me. I took a picture of one recently from my yard with no tail too. Funny and spunky birds but they crowd my native species of birds. At least they are not a parasitic brooder like cowbirds. Nice backyard images.

The first photo was when No-Tail was just a baby. She spent most of her time pulling the downy feathers off of her. I think she thought it might help her fly better as she had a very hard time. The other No-Tail bird I watched sit in the birdhouse, but never fly. Finally she did. Both are nesting now with mates. I can't wait to see if their babies lack tails too.

Sparrows do take over the feeders thats for sure. I did get a woodpecker to the feeder today which surprised me.
