I think this addresses some of the issues concerning the sky and the lower left area raised in the original post. What say you?
1. HDR conv. and tonemapping redone

Oh ya! I like the rework much more. Nice job! :thumb Is that some ghosting I see on that kid at the lower left corner (the one with her ?father?)?

Ah I'm glad it addressed the issues. Yup that is ghosting. It's hard to get 30-40 tourists to stand still for a 5 image shoot :D It turns out that in this case the "minimize movement" option in photomatix actually couldn't handle that motion.
Thanks for the reply.

Very nice, Jack. Big improvement. So was the tip to keep your eye on the histogram while adjusting the HDR settings useful for you, or not?

Cheers,
-joel

Not really joel. There were no blown hilites in either image during tone mapping. As you know Photomatix has two tone mapping methods. The original image was mapped using Tone Compressor which I like to use as it "generally" produces a more natural less surreal image. The second or redo image was mapped using Detail Enhancer which opens up the shadows. For some reason, even though the 0, -1. and -2 ev images had no blown hilites, TC just didn't work well here.

Very interesting. Sounds like the TC mode just couldn't handle the dynamic range of the shot.
