A smoking ban was introduced in Ireland in all public buildings, including pubs. The result is :

We've had that for years in California. A friend of mine once cracked me up as we walked by a tall building during lunch, with all the folks on break smoking. They were all standing facing away from the building, most with blank expressions, relaxing and enjoying their smokes.

My friend said, "Smokers. They're the gargoyles of our time."

Cracked me up.

That's a very keen observation:-)

when they ban the booze from the bars:cry. There's a push from newcomers to Nevada to ban smoking here, like in California. I'm waiting for them to try and push a smoking ban in the casinos. The reformists will have quite the battle because there is a lot of money that can be used against them. I can see it now, a person gets up from their slot machine to have a smoke and someone else sits in their spot. I'm not sure which is more hazardous, cigarettes or a gambler:roflthat wants his machine back.

And Note: I've never been a smoker.

unless you have to walk "through" all that smoke to get your beer! :):

What I hate as a non smoker is having to walk past 5 or 10 people puffing away, just because it's "outside" I still have to smell it and walk through the clouds of smoke.

In California there are some signs restricting how close to a building you are allowed to smoke, which helps a little.

BTW, I'm allergic to cigarette smoke, so it's really not funny when my eyes start to burn, sting and water up and I start coughing as I have to walk past the smokers. My hubby's allergic to strong scents -- he can't stand being in a small candle shop, for example, or in the perfume section, or in some of these scented "new age" shops.

We've gotten so spoiled (as non smokers) in California, that when I went back east and visited friends in New Jersey I nearly fell on the floor when the restaurant asked if we wanted smoking or non smoking!

Interesting points of view, Imho, the smoking ban is a good idea. Smoking has become very anti-social in the last few years. But in the winter here it is miserable going for a smoke when you are out for a pint:cry .

thanks for the feedback Angelo, :thumb

Like your photos, seamus. So real....
I gave up smoking a year ago... Feel myself better, has no idea why I was smoking...
Just like it was in another life...
Spasibo for your excellent photos,
Yuri

Thanks Yuri, I don't take photos of people normally and wasn't sure how they would turn out.

Re smoking, i'm going to have to try to give them up myself. A pack of 20 is €6.35, $7.67, 9.90 aus$.

I could buy a lot of lens with the money I would save.

Nice pics of quaint ol' Ireland, Shay. You should show us some pics of the inside!

Chris, here in SA they have split the casinos into smoking and non-smoking sections. Seems to have worked well as both sides are usually full over weekends.

Unfortunately I was driving:cry , I stayed outside and drank water.

These places are only 40 miles or so outside Dublin, they make a change from the hustle and bustle of the city.

I actually think this would make a good theme -- pictures of people smoking outside various non-smoking buildings. I know in California it would be easy to find many subjects. If I only had a longer lens, I could drive around the office park I work in on my lunch break and take pictures of all the office workers smoking outside on their lunch breaks for a week and post some of the better ones here. There's bound to be some great photo ops.

Unfortunately, my lens is too short for such a stealth assignment. :cry

I really like the idea though!
