This was taken during a recent trip to Cannon Beach in Oregon. It was way past sunset, and my camera was on a tripod on the deck of my hotel room. I shot this with my Nikon N80, 400 speed film.
I appreciate your comments and feedback on this. Thank you!

Beautiful delicate colors. The rock-in-ocean-at-dusk thing has been done about a zillion times; see Ian's post from last week or Gubbs' fantastic FM MA winner: http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=9644 or Fred's own jaw dropper: http://www.fredmiranda.com/hosting-data//501/2sunrise.jpg
One thing that makes both Fred's and Gubbs' images so beautiful is the fantastic dynamic range. Both have quite a lot of shadow detail. To my eye, that makes them seem much more realistic, though they are both otherwordly scenes. People's eyes, unlike cameras, piece a scene together from smaller parts each exposed perfectly as our attention moves. So it has to be darn dark before my eye loses as much shadow detail as you have here. I tried recovering some with shadow/highlight, but there wasn't anything to recover. Since this was film that you scanned, perhaps you this info exists somewhere?
As for the composition, it is nice but comparison with Fred Miranda's and Gubbs' images is interesting. Your composition is centered and more static than they are. Fred's group of rocks is centered, true, but lop sided. It conveys great peace and yet repays long viewing. Gubb's image is very off balance and dynamic. It really isn't peaceful to look at. It makes me think that The Wierd Sisters from Macbeth are near, stirring their cauldron.
Still, I did enjoy looking at this.

I take it back, your composition isn't centered. I don't know what came over me. It has just as much lack of balance as Fred's. And the angle isn't straight either. So now I just think the lack of shadow detail makes the image less interesting, a very similar comment to the one I made about Ian's Pigeon Point shot.

Thank you for your feedback. And thanks for sharing those other images. You're right, they are awesome!

So, the question begs to be asked...what the heck is NikonGirl doing at Cannon Beach? Geez, don't they have someone watching the gate? Or at least a "White Lenses Only" sign?
:rofl
I know, it's "Cannon" not "Canon"...

I like this photo. I can't pick out anything that is necessarily lacking except maybe more saturation (as an experiment).
I think it is well done, and look forward to seeing if someone can find something I am missing or not thinking about.

call me a "suk-up" if you like but....
I really agree with Shay about this shot. I've looked at it several times since it was first posted, and well...I like it just the way it is actually. I had nothing to comment on as far as a critique, but since Shay came out and said it, I wanted to stop by and say-that's pretty much my feeling.
For me, it works because it's *different*. It doesn't look like the shots mentioned above, and for me that's a good thing. It's very dreamy looking. The softness of the water, the *lack* of details in the shadows, the centered compostition and play between the big rock\little rock-it all works for me. Did you notice the wonderful seperation of color tones as you move up the shot from the foreground to the top? That bright band in the center breaking up the different blues? That looks pretty cool to me, I think Nikon Girl nailed that pretty darn good. Plus, I give bonus points for photographers who can pull this off with film. No histogram to check no 15 shot multiple exposure experiments, yea baby-the real deal :wink
I have a feeling, and Nikon Girl would have to verify this-but I have a feeling that this is exactly what the scene looked like when she shot it. I've seen places look this way before, and when I look at her shot I am instantly reminded of them.
All I can say is "great shot" and "wonderful colors" :D
