If you use our Simple Uploader, you'll now get our newest, fastest, most robust uploader :clap :clap It has support for dupes and more error checking. And it's faaaaaaast.
In IE, and FF Win, Safari Win be sure you click "Run"
http://img.skitch.com/20090702-pfme81my2y4d3rrtxwns71f2at.jpg
On a Mac, in FF or Safari, be sure to Click "Allow" here:

Yeah, that message is scary - we don't control it, Sun Java does (we're sorry!).
Enjoy the new uploady goodness. Help pages and release notes coming!

I am using it right now and am not a fan already. It seems much slower than the other uploader and I have no option to view the thumbnails in my folders so I can select the right files, so that is consuming a lot of time as well.

Maybe it's just an illusion because I'm used to seeing 3 upload at a time and being able to choose by thumbnail. I use a Compaq presario, Firefox is the browser, and the file sizes range from 4.5-6 MB each.

i'm getting an "error during upload", FF 3.0.5 on OS X. wish we had the option to fall back to the old one until the new one is fully debugged . . . the old old uploaded is a real hassle.

Can you try clearing your cache and closing, reopening and uploading again? We tested thoroughly and it sure doesn't sound like any error we ever saw - can you screen grab it? Thanks!

The only thing I can suggest is leave the photos uploaded in the window with
"done" or "uploaded" behind them. I drag one or so at a time and sometimes
not sure which ones were dragged in.

I just uploaded one picture to give it a try, the speed seemed fine. I did like the option of having thumbnails though.

+100
I'm using it now to upload last night's games, and I don't like it at all. Many times, I upload as I PP photos. I go through 30 or 40 shots, then start the upload. When the first upload completes, I add more. With the old simple uploader, we had the option of selecting either files OR folders. After the first upload, I could select 'add files', and it would take me right back to the game folder I was uploading from.
Now.............when I want to upload more files to the folder I just uploaded to, I can't select 'files only', and I have to start all over again, clicking through Jim-pictures-knippixels-pixie tourney-7-2 finals-et 1, then I have to click to change it from 'details' to 'list':bash .
Upload speed is not that big of a deal to me, but now, my speed at my desk has been slowed down.

The only suggestion I have is you REALLY need to give us the option to see our files as thumbnails! It is nearly impossible for me to find my files without sitting down and making a list first since it will not let you view the selection window over an open Folder window. It is really frustrating, I am back to using "old faithful" as it is much easier for me to find the photos I want and then just walk away. PLEASE GIVE US OUR THUMBNAILS BACK!!:cry

I am also having a tough time with the new uploader. It feels slower and there are no thumbnails which adds on extra time to the process though I can drag and drop now.
This is infuriating!! I do wish you wouldn't keep changing things for the sake of it. I don't care if it's supposed to be faster - it doesn't work.
You can't see thumbnails when you select files for uploading and can't see them as thumbnails in the upload screen. That makes the whole procedure a guess unless you refer back to the file containing the original images and check the filenames of each image you want to upload. Which slows you down. You also can't add the title at the time of file selection/uploading which slows the whole process down again as you now have to title them as a separate procedure after they have been uploaded.
Why not add this method as yet another way of uploading and keep the original way as it is.
Sometimes I think the staff at Smugmug have too much time on their hands!
PLEASE bring back the original 'Simple' upload method.
By the way, I'm uploading my files anyway as I have no other choice and it's taking forever - much, MUCH slower than before.
(ie8, Vista 64, 4 - 5mb jpegs)
edit - OK that took nearly half an hour to upload 6 x jpegs all of which were under 5mb. This is not good!

Hi Knip, I'm so sorry! We had a terrible time getting updates from the 3rd Party that made the old uploader. I hope you'll find a workflow that works with our new one - and that the benefits of speed & robustness win out.

I used it last night and love it - I thought it was faster even before I read this thread.
I'm surprised at all the mentions of the uploader not giving an option to view thumbnails. Why not just drag and drop from a Windows explorer box with thumbnail view?
My workflow is that LR exports my files (I do 30-40 at a time similar to what others are doing) and pops open a windows explorer window, which is set to thumbnail view.
So I just drag and drop from there to the new uploader and click upload.
After the next 30-40 are edited (and while the 1st set is uploading), I export again and LR opens up another windows explorer window, and the first file in that new set is automatically highlighted, so a quick "shift+end" and the 2nd set of 30-40 files is 'selected' then I just drag and drop again.
AND I DON'T HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL THE 1st SET IS COMPLETE - WHICH IS COOL!!! :thumb
Anyway, I don't see any negatives to it yet :dunno

Email me, attn: Andy at our help desk - we'll diagnose the issue.
I'm sorry we had to change the uploader. The old one was not our property and getting updates was problematic. So we invested a lot of money and built our own, which we know is faster (though I see you've experienced otherwise), is more robust, and more error-free.
Write me, we'll help!

I haven't got an issue to diagnose other than I wanted the option of having the original uploader back. I don't really care too much about about the speed, I just want an intuitive and easy to use upload method where I can see what I am uploading and title each image as I go. I never had an issue with the original uploader - you keep mentioning more robust - what does that mean exactly? Error free? I never had a single error with the original method.
If you had to come up with your own uploader for whatever reason why did you make one so completely different if it's isn't an improvement. Speed issues apart, it's clumsy and creates more work for the user.
But if you have spent a lot of our money on it then I guess we will all just have to live with it even though it seems like a giant step backwards :scratch

Does it really say 'notinited' or was that a typo? Is the little X in the upper corner of the browser or in the upper corner of a white box located w/in the page inside the rest of the SmugMug layout? What OS is this Vista or XP or something else? Do you have any extra security settings setup? Could you tell me what version of java you're running since this is a problem across both browsers (http://www.javatester.org/version.html)?
Oh also were you ever prompted to allow the uploader 'access' and if you were did you click accept or deny?
Thanks,

I'm trying the new uploader and uploading 358 photos to a military category (gallery: Army Base Leopoldsburg http://lucdejaeger.smugmug.com/gallery/3057698_YQRr7#166622077_aYnPm) and it seems there are no photos showing up after page 39 (the last photo is #468) while there still are some 150 or more photos being uploaded to this gallery. However, they still don't show up after about 15 minutes...
Currently, there are only 2 errors listed so that I suppose all other photos are still uploaded successfully, but where are they? Should I stop uploading?
Is there a limit to upload photos to a gallery or has it to do with the new uploader? Or should I not worry about it. Can there be a backlog?
Thanks anyway.

Good to hear hawk, it may seem perceptually slower but it shouldn't really be any slower since if you're uploading 1 file, 3 files or 100 files its still using up all the available bandwidth. Once a file is uploaded and while it waits for smugmug to confirm that the bits arrived it starts uploading the next file so it can keep your bandwidth saturated.

Ouch, we feel your pain, but the reason we removed the thumbnails was to settle a patent dispute. It may seem hard to imagine, but there are currently 3 patent lawsuits against us at the moment and last month if I do the math correctly, our legal bills for defending ourselves against patent complaints was higher than what we spent on engineering.
The good news is on both Windows and Macs they still allow you to view the files as thumbnails despite the lawsuits against them (http://news.cnet.com/8301-1001_3-10129022-92.html) and then you can just drag them onto our uploader. Then just hold down the shift key while you select many files to drag:

After an hour, the uploader is still uploading pictures (still 87 to go) but the photos seem not to be added to my gallery anymore... The last photo in the gallery still is #468 and seems to be stuck at that). No idea where the photos that are still being uploaded successfully are going.... They seem to be uploaded in some vacuum...
The upload log too is stuck at photo #468 as if there are no uploads anymore (but the uploader is still successfully uploading and while I write there still are 85 to go).

I am uploading to 5 different galleries as I edit more files to be uploaded later. The interface is very well done and the duplicate checking option is great. I am sure it will save me a great deal of time someday when I have a lost connection.
Just my opinion but I think it is faster, The 5 galleries are zipping right along. I could be wrong but I don't think so :thumb

Actually I had to register with dgrin only to post my praise for the new uploader :-) This is beyond any joke...
The thing is I've been having quite a bit of trouble with the old uploader; first of all the status/progress bar for upload in Firefox (/XP) was some kind of "always on top" very annoying window (maybe there was a workaround but I was too lazy to research and I put up with the progress bar over anything I was reading for however long I was uploading something). Then for long video files it would happen that sometimes it would do "checking file" (or something similar) at the end of the upload and then throw some error and restart the transfer. However the file was fine on the server as far as I can tell and if I left it unatended for a longer time it would do multiple copies (all good as I could tell) and still not finish!
The new one is also much faster I would say; the old one was going with way under 500 kbps, more like 300 kbps (I can upload with a bit over 1Mbps if I do a sftp/ftp/rsync to some other box on internet) - the new uploader gets constantly over 700 kbps after the first minute or so.
I still got one error I can't account for while uploading a large file (video) but at least it went through with the other files (and I can upload that one manually).
For my work flow the loss of thumbnails isn't a problem at all, I always dropped files in the "java window" from some other application that has thumbnails (like Picassa, iView, etc).
I still don't get the "skip duplicates" feature; the default is "allow" however when I drop some files that were already present it checks them and says [View duplicate]Skipping! right away (even if I leave the default "Allow"). Is it actually remembering the "skip" option I chose the last time or what's the story?

I'm reading through this thread, and I'm a bit confused at the consternation about adding files/folders. It says really clearly that you can drag files or folders onto it. Like Baldy said, use your OS to browse and drag them in. TBH, I would never even think of doing it any other way than dragging. It's just so much easier. Maybe having been raised on a Mac I'm just more used to dragging things? I can't imagine ever having a problem with that. You can drag from the Finder (or whatever it's called in Windows), Lightroom, Bridge, iPhoto, Picasa, whatever.

when 1 uploaded I stopped it to check & nothing...still did not upload the image!
it's far easier on Drag & Drop so i'm just going to do it that way! thanks

Incompatabilies with Opera and websites almost always eventually are worked out so I will use Olde Faithful uploader reluctantly until that happens.

Old Faithful? Yuck.
Isn't it easier to use Firefox and the good uploader?
Don't want to get into a browser war, but I've tried Firefox and still prefer Opera which I've been using since 2000 (before it was free) :D
I did try the new uploader in IE and it looked good. Firefox is no longer installed so if it comes to it I will (reluctantly) use IE as a backup.
FYI, when I try to upload something using Opera it jumps right to the "verifying" stage and doesn't even appear to start uploading.
Thanks,
Craig

So far working flawless for me. Using Google chrome as my browser as well.

Do we have to keep the upload window in focus? Sometimes I re-arrange my tabs in Safari 4 (OS 10.4.11) and when I did that the photos didn't upload. At some point I grabbed the tab the uploader was on and merged it to a different window and got the area surrounding the uploader onto it, but the uploader itself (the area that says "Adding stuff to . . . .") stayed back in the old window.
It was odd, but it does seem faster when it works.

I uploaded over 500 files on friday using this uploader on firefox and vista, no problems what so ever. and was seeing a solid 1.9 mb/s when even on a speed test I cap out at around 2.0 m/s upload speed(25 mb/s down muahaha)
maybe I'm a lucky one?:dunno

After spending some time with this new uploader, it has a few pluses, but more minuses for me.
Plus--it can skip duplicates, as long as it is by filename. Less work figuring out a bad upload batch. :thumb
Minus--it seems to only work on one of my setups so far. It simply crashes IE6.0 on my Wyse xpe thin client. I have yet to try it on a version of FF on the same machine. It no longer will automatically saturate three different upload streams like the old uploader would due to the lack of multi-threading. It does seem to play nice side-by-side with itself when a completely new instance of the browser is initiated.
I complete understand the neccessity of having to make this uploader change, and this is a really good start for a first version. :thumb
But I'm really liking the idea of moving to some sort of FTP to SM bridge. This way, you run a bridge client locally on your system, and connect to it via any available ftp client. The bridge client passes all the information back to the ftp client like an ftp server would and all errors and other issues are translated to standard ftp stuff. The client will then let you know there was an error, it's retrying a file, etc.
Sudden change in workflow is a problem. When you have something down pat as a building block for your business and then it suddenly changes, you're having to put out fires. I think a lot of us are scrambling right now.

I don't expect that a Wyse XPE Thin client is supported. Try an OS / Browser combination that's not almost 8 years old? Thanks :D

I have tried to load 125 pictures. Only 74 loaded. All the rest came as errors and read "read timed out".
I have downloaded java, reconnected to the internet, tried to load the same pictures a couple of times and the same thing. I ended up using the old internet explorer loader and it worked but the pictures didn't show up on my gallery for 10-15 minutes.
I have a PC, vista, internet explorer
am I doing something wrong?

Oddly enough, the system that does work is a Neoware (now HP) e90 thin client. This one is actually out of production. :dunno

Hi, I am trying to upload to a new gallery (but have tried old ones too, same result) & always use the simple uploader, but when I click on add photos, it goes to the upload box, but it has a cross in it the top left corner (the sort of cross that shows when you can't view an image on the net) & instead of showing upload at the top right, it says "Done" also, the title of the box "adding stuff to" looks different, writing is bigger or something..... http://upload.smugmug.com/photos/add.mg?AlbumID=8808044&applet=9 (http://upload.smugmug.com/photos/add.mg?AlbumID=8808044&applet=9) here is the link to the upload page...I have had a look at other uploaders, but this suits me best at the moment... I have also waited an hour to see if it fixed itself & have rebooted the computer, but no luck...
When I came to Dgrin see if anyone else was experiencing problems uploading, it was the first I had heard of the new uploader...
thanks, Kim

Hi Kim,
Check my reply via Email. Re-installing the latest java version should help. Go to www.java.com and click on 'free java download'. Follow the instructions to download and install java.
I hope this helps,

When I uploaded 2 pictures- it cropped it automatically - it cut off the sides. I don't want it to do that. What is the problem?

That's the part we don't really test on, Sorry Samir!Understandable. There are some quirks to these machines, but when they work, they always work--no worries about viruses, registry garbage, or anything else. :clap They're like a toaster, and that's the only reason I try to use them for critical tasks like photo uploads and servers.
Apparently the Wyse brand thin client doesn't like any SM uploader on any browser anymore. :cry I even tried the same FF setup that works on the neoware with no luck. I can't even get older legacy uploaders like drag and drop to work. And this is the only xp system that's at this location with the three cable modems. :cry I really didn't need this hassle right now...
I'm going to try Komodo Drop. Hopefully this will work before I have to leave for a meeting.

Komodo drop just crashed too. I give up. The *** with uploading all this.

I just want to say I appreciate the new duplicates handling feature, especially the ability to replace images. I think I whined about that a while back, so I owe it to Smugmug to say "Thanks!" :thumb
Easy replacement will save me a lot of time! (I often find that I want to improve my raw processing of an image after I've uploaded it)
It does seem faster, though I haven't really timed it.
:dunnoIt does not seem to work for me and yes I downloaded the latest java. I've tried it in Firefox and IE to no avail. When I hit upload the picture disappears so I click done and check the photos but they are not there. I've had to revert to the old faithful. What am I not doing?

And although not officially supported, I have successfully used this uploader on FF portable v1.0.7 (portableapps.com). Try downgrading your FF version or starting out with a clean install.

Hi guys, this is a follow up to my question a few days ago.
I use tabs extensively in Safari 4, OS X (10.4.11) moving and rearranging them throughout the day. When I do that and the new uploader is no longer the focus, it stops loading.
To prevent that, I tried grabbing the tab the uploader was on and putting it as its own window, but this happened:
http://www.imrphoto.com/photos/588930688_o3yQu-L.jpg
The uploader "part" stayed behind, while the window around it moved to the new window. Notice that when I move the mouse over where the uploader itself stayed, it shows the page behind it through. Once I did that it stopped uploading.
http://www.imrphoto.com/photos/588930713_qnpo7-L.jpg
The previous uploader popped a little progress window and as long as we didn't close it and the uploader window it let me move tabs and open new windows without any problems.
Thoughts?

Check your versions of Firefox and IE. I've found that IE 6.0 simply crashes with this new uploader.
We support it on IE6/Win XP SP 2, holler to me at the help desk if we can help in your specific situation.

I have noticed some behavior that I've seen with some of the third party uploaders, but never a SM one. This occurs when uploading videos. It seems the uploader reads the entire file before starting the transfer. While this has been not very noticeable on locally attached storage, it seems to be a real bottleneck when uploading files stored on my fileserver. Reading 2.9GB of files before uploading them takes time. This was also one of the major problems I had in my initial testing of Komododrop. (I'm having to step back to my old upload style of multiple upload sessions on multiple computers to maximize my upload bandwidth. I need 6-9 simultaneous upload sessions before all the cable modems stay saturated.)
Also, has anyone had issues with adding files from across a network? I'm finding that it goes insanely slow on certain types of batches. I can't figure out the pattern as to the exact type of batches, but my example is 430 files, mixed photos and videos, and after over an hour, only about 300 are queued and it's still working on it. :dunno

Queuing is now taking me hours, moreless the transfer itself.
This new workflow isn't working for me. I'm already a day behind and I haven't even started working on the galleries themselves. :cry :cry :cry
