Greetings, excuse the noobiness of my post please...
I just bought a used Nikon D50 as my first digital SLR, finally made the step up after putting a million miles on an old Yashica 35mm.
I see a lot of stuff on sale here with "25,000 shots", etc., and I know there must be a way to review the shot count / number of shutter firings / whatever you want to call it. I just don't have a clue how to, and neither the manual nor the aftermarket guide book explain.
Anyone care to enlighten me how I can review the shot count for my new camera?
Thanks... I'm enjoying this site quite a bit. Found out about it through ADVrider.com. :thumb

Download a tool like Opanda (http://www.opanda.com/en/iexif/) and open an image with this tool and it will tell you exactly how many images were taken.
Looks like this:

Thanks fellas. I guess I figured the camera body would have an "odometer".

In the Nikon line, this capability did not exist in the D1 series or the D100, xo I don't believe you can use EXIF readers against those models.
Nikon service can reset the counter after a major service operation, which I believe they do after a shutter box "and" mirror box replacement. If those operations have not been performed then I believe you can trust the EXIF actuations counter. (Of course if the shutter and mirror assemblies have been replaced, it's almost like a new machine anyway.)

Welcome Mark
I'm partial to the D50, great little camera. I'm at 54k and all is well.

Time flies when you're having phun! Think of all the development (film) costs you saved since May... :wink
update: 27k in <2 months? Almost sounds like you bought a used or reconditioned camera.

I bought it new from Amazon. This same tool says the first pics were 44, 45, etc.
I'm thinking maybe the number is 8,000 instead of 28,000.
The last file name from today is 9819.jpg
but that software says 27,906.
There's no way i have taken that many shots in just two months. :(

Can you show us the full version of a late image? Someone else viewing the data on their end can confirm the true count.

I'm seeing the count @ 28107. So you've been really busy, or....
Now, share (if you still have it) the very first shot you took with the D700. This will help us to determine if you got a refurb or a new unit.
UPDATE: and it looks like on May 5th you already had 6871 shots on that bod.

and you started the air show, end of April, with roughly 4012

So, looks like you've been really busy... If you rattle off continuous shots, 28k can happen in a short time.
Oh, and welcome to the Nikon side of the street...

Well, I do shoot pretty much all the time, so I guess it's not that too far out to think I have shot that many pics. Still seems like a lot though.
Looking at the old pics I guess I bought this camera in April.
